Among the wide variety of club sports Millersville University has to offer, the Women’s Club Rugby team provides students with the opportunity to participate in a demanding and strategic sport alongside their academic studies. Like most clubs at MU, this organization fosters an opportunity for students to stay active and involved.
The club welcomes players from all experience levels with the sport, including some who have never played. Practices are held frequently to build skill and endurance for weekend tournaments against other schools’ club teams.
“We had one or two track and field people, a lot of soccer and a couple of people who just didn’t play sports at all who came out and joined,” says Ashlynne Quinn, a junior on the team.
The team doesn’t only bond through their sport, though. They often hang out outside of practices and games, grab meals together, and study in the library. One tradition the club has after each Fall Involvement Fair is a team cookout.
“That’s where I think a lot of our girls kind of get the feel for what is past the sport in general. You want to know who you’re kind of hanging out with,” says Quinn.
Quinn emphasizes the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone and joining the team, especially since it has come so far. The team went from having only seven members on the team, which is the minimal amount required for a team and total number of players needed on the field, to a team of 24 people.
“We’ve grown so much from the last three years. Every day, every game, every practice is continuous improvement,” says Quinn. “Every tournament I get a little bit better. We’re growing, we’re continuing, we’re learning and that’s honestly what I think the club sports are about.
