The emo cowgirl has traded in her signature blue for pink in her brand new album, “Cloud 9.” Megan Moroney fans have been itching for new music since the “Wonder” singer released her second album, “Am I Okay?” This album skyrocketed the 28 year old’s music career from being a known country singer to a household name, selling out arenas in an hour for her upcoming tour.
The 15-track album, which includes two collabs, one with Ed Sheeran and another with Kacey Musgraves, is receiving a lot of positive feedback from fans. However, the biggest thing people are saying about this album is that it would be a happier album from Moroney, given that the two lead singles are happier. However, fewer than half are happy songs, and most are the usual sappy breakup songs we typically see from Moroney.
However, despite the initial shock, the song that is grabbing the most attention from fans is the second-to-last track, “Who Hurt You?” The opening verse already set the tone for the song with the line, “the devil went down to Georgia, then he crossed the ‘Bama line.” Moroney is from Georgia, and another famous country singer, Ella Langley, is from Alabama.
What makes this relevant? Well, Langley and Moroney are both rumored to have dated “Different ‘Round Here” singer, Riley Green. Due to this, the two women are constantly pitted against each other, despite them trying to clear the air about the drama multiple times. Most notably at the Country Music Awards when the two did the Charlie’s Angels pose together.
A significant aspect to acknowledge about this situation is that people rarely pit two men against each other who have dated the same woman. It’s always the other way around. Another notable example of this is Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter, following their relationships with Joshua Bassett. I think if either of these situations ended in a collaboration from both artists, it would break the music culture world.
Another thing to point out is that when fans have been calling out Riley Green online regarding track 14, he would block the Moroney fan for the comment, which is digging his grave even deeper and making him look even more guilty than he already is. Fans are just waiting for Langley and Moroney to “work it out on the remix.” Just like Lorde and Charli XCX did.
I think this album is going to set Moroney up to headline stadiums in the next year and a half because of how fast her career is currently climbing. However, upon first listen, my three favorites are “Stupid,” “Who Hurt You?”, and “Change of Heart.” I also think the collabs regarding the style and vibe of the album were perfect picks, specifically with it being one female and one male collab, especially as Sheeran has collaborated on pop-country albums in the past (Red by Taylor Swift).
I hope to see this album win some CMA awards and, hopefully, some Grammys too in the next year, because Moroney deserves it, especially for this album.
