“The Trump Administration does not believe popping more pills is always the answer for better health.”
The Trump administration released this statement in a Sept. 22 article regarding the use of Tylenol, specifically the active drug acetaminophen, for use by pregnant women.
“There is mounting evidence finding a connection between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “And that’s why the Administration is courageously issuing this new health guidance.”
The new guidance, announced by President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., aims to “confront the nation’s autism spectrum disorder epidemic,” which has increased 400% since 2000, according to the White House.
“For too long, families have been left without answers or options as autism rates have soared,” Kennedy said. “Today, we are taking bold action- opening the door to the first FDA-recognized treatment pathway, informing doctors and families about potential risks, and investing in groundbreaking research. We will follow the science, restore trust, and deliver hope to millions of American families.”
“Additionally, the Trump Administration is approving a new treatment option that has been found to improve some autism symptoms. President Trump pledged to address America’s skyrocketing rates of autism, and his team is deploying Gold Standard Science to deliver on this pledge. We will not be deterred in these efforts as we know millions across America are grateful.”
The White House’s page cites studies from Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and Mount Sinai.
“Our findings show that higher-quality studies are more likely to show a link between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and increased risks of autism and ADHD,” said Mount Sinai’s Dr. Diddier Prada. “Given the widespread use of this medication, even a small increase in risk could have major public health implications.”
“Don’t take Tylenol,” Trump said. “You’ll be uncomfortable . . . If you’re pregnant, don’t take Tylenol.”
