“Two For The Road,” I didn’t want the road to end

Scotty McCreery performing “This Is It.” | Payje Davis / Snapper

On Friday, Nov. 14, country music icons Dustin Lynch and Scotty McCreery performed at Santander Arena in Reading, PA. The reason for the “Two On The Road” theme is that the two co-headlined the tour, having an almost equal set time.

We unfortunately missed the first opener, Walker Montgomery, due to being pressed for time before the show. However, the two acts I had the chance to see put on an amazing performance that I’m so glad I got to see.

We got there right as McCreery was starting, and he did not disappoint with hits like “This Is It,” “See You Tonight,” and “Five More Minutes.” I saw him five years ago, and the performance this time around was such an improvement for him from the last time.

The production was significantly better; however, the one stagnant thing from both shows was his sound. He’s sounded amazing since his days on “American Idol.” One song that I forgot about and remembered I enjoyed is ‘It Matters To Her.”

While a good track, some of the most memorable parts of McCreery’s sets were when he played videos from his wedding during “This Is It.” He also mentioned how that song was his and his wife’s wedding song, whom he met in kindergarten. However, truly, the cutest part of the show was when McCreery brought his five-year-old son out on stage to hang out with him during a few songs and wave to the crowd.

Lynch then took the stage around 9:10 p.m., with a long list of hits over the last 13 years; he had a stacked setlist of songs that everyone in the crowd knew almost every word to. From vocals to production, Dustin Lynch is an underrated performer in the country music scene.

Playing oldies like “Cowboys and Angels” and “She Cranks My Tractor” to modern-day hits like “Stars Like Confetti” and “Chevrolet,” he had a packed setlist for fans of all different eras.

However, his best performance of the night is one of my favorite Dustin Lynch songs. The riffs he hit, to how the production looked; everything was perfect about this song and the way he performed it. That song is “Momma’s House” off his album “Tullahoma.” Even days after the concert, I can’t stop thinking about it and wishing I could see and hear it all over again.

Some memorable portions of Lynch’s set were when he explained that he released “Cowboys and Angels” solely in hopes that his grandparents would like it. They did more than just like it; this song ended up becoming Lynch’s first single on country radio. Which made his grandparents even more proud than they already were.

Another was when he brought McCreery back on stage to finish out the show with some covers, such as “Chattahoochee” by Allen Jackson and “My Town” by Montgomery Gentry.

Overall, I went into this show not knowing what to expect and was just excited for the show and was left absolutely blown away. These two gentlemen are absolutely underrated, and I can’t wait to see what they do for their next tours and projects.
