On Jan. 16, the popular gaming company, Nintendo, announced the successor to the Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2.

In the two-and-a-half-minute teaser video for the console, Nintendo shows off the up-and-coming successor, showing off its slightly bigger, sleeker design, complete with a bigger display screen and larger controllers. The console also features additional ports, supposedly making it more adaptable to other devices, such as TVs and laptops, and allowing the console to have additional plug-ins.

Towards the end of the first-look trailer, Nintendo teased upcoming gameplay that fans of the company can look forward to seeing upon the console’s release—the highly anticipated next installment of the “Mario Kart” franchise. In the 20-second clip of gameplay shown, fans were quick to catch the 24 starting spaces behind the iconic checkered finish line instead of the usual 12, which had fans like me hoping for a wider range of multiplayer activities.

On Feb. 5, Nintendo announced the first Nintendo Direct for the Switch 2, which has officially opened the floodgates for fans to suggest what games they would love to see come out for the console later this year. The obvious suggestions, such as “Mario Kart 9,” a new “Kirby” game, and “Tomodachi Life 2” are all in the running for highly suggested games. Along with these fan suggestions, it has been rumored that both “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” and “The Wind Waker” will be getting remastered for the upcoming release.

Nintendo has also made sure to announce that the Switch 2 will be compatible with both Switch 2 exclusive and Nintendo Switch games.

“Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2,” Nintendo writes. “Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.”

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be released this year, with more information on the console itself and upcoming games being released at the upcoming Nintendo Direct, which is being live-streamed on April 2, 6:00 a.m. PT and 9:00 a.m. ET. You can tune into the live stream on the official Nintendo YouTube channel.
