22-year-old Morgan Geyser, who was convicted of brutally stabbing her classmate to please popular Creepypasta character “Slender Man” in 2014, was apprehended in Posen, Illinois, Sunday night.
When she was 12, Geyser and her friend, Anissa Weier, lured another classmate, Payton Leutner, to a suburban park in Milwaukee. Geyser and Weier then stabbed the girl, almost killing her, with two claiming they had to attack her, or risk having the fictional boogeyman “Slender Man” come after their families.
Geyser was charged with first-degree intentional homicide and tried as an adult. She was then found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, and at 15 was sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in a mental hospital for the 2014 attack.
Geyser was moved to a group home in January, following the ruling from a judge that she should be released from Winnebago Mental Health Institute, where she had spent nearly seven years.
Geyser left a group home in Madison, Wisconsin, after cutting off her Department of Corrections monitoring bracelet. She was last seen at the group home around 8:15 p.m., and her tracking device malfunctioned at approximately 9:30 p.m. The Department of Corrections then reached out to the group home at about 11:30 p.m., where the department was informed by staff that Geyser was not there, and had removed her tracking device.
No 911 call was made until 7:46 a.m. the next day, when someone from the home called to report that Geyser had vanished. At 7:58 a.m., Madison police were then sent to investigate the missing person report. Prior to the 911 call, the Madison Police Department was not aware that Geyser was missing.
Geyser was found at a truck stop in Posen, Illinois, with a 42-year-old friend. The 42-year-old man was charged with criminal trespassing and obstructing identification but was later released from custody. Posen is about 125 miles south of Madison, where Geyser originally went missing.
