During the Nintendo Direct on Friday, Sept. 12, popular video game company Capcom revealed its first look at the gameplay for its upcoming release of the ninth “Resident Evil” game.
Titled “Resident Evil Requiem,” Capcom first announced the long-awaited addition to the franchise at the 2025 Summer Game Fest. In the original reveal trailer, we meet the game’s protagonist, FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, while getting a glimpse into what her story may be about.
“Everything is set in motion when a body—the victim of an unidentifiable disease—is discovered in an abandoned hotel,” Capcom’s website states. “ The crime scene is at the very same hotel where her mother died eight years ago.”
At the Nintendo Direct on Friday, fans of the franchise were able to get a look at the gameplay, watching as Ashcroft experiences the atmosphere of a once familiar Raccoon City in the game’s newest trailer. According to Capcom’s website, the gameplay will consist of both first and third-person points of view, allowing the player to “experience the series’ classic survival horror through combat, investigations, puzzles, and resource management.”
Following the release of the second trailer, fans online discussed their excitement for the upcoming release, sharing theories and analyzing the new gameplay.
“The atmospheric horror design looks exceptional – building on classic survival elements while introducing fresh narrative depth,” one fan commented on X. “Grace as a protagonist suggests an evolution in storytelling approach for the franchise.”
Despite the praise the game is already receiving, certain players have also begun to criticize the game. One X user notes how “Resident Evil Requiem” will be experiencing “noticeable sacrifices” in graphics quality when playing on a Nintendo console as opposed to enjoying the game on PC or console. This could potentially cause problems for players in the future, seeing that “Resident Evil Requiem” will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Described by Capcom as “a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core,” “Resident Evil Requiem” is set to be released Feb. 27, 2026, and is available to wishlist on multiple platforms now.
