On Oct 17, Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Vincent Mason, and Mackenzie Carpenter took the stage at the Hershey Giant Center on Davis’s “Ain’t Enough Road Tour.” Davis played an array of songs, from major hits like “Singles You Up” to fan favorites and new songs like “Church in a Chevy” and “Turn This Truck Around.”
The show started at 7 PM with the first opener, Mackenzie Carpenter, who played a short five-song set. She studded a black corset tank top, brown leather fringe pants, and black boots at the sweetest place on earth, being the only girl on a lineup full of men. The fit is essential to the girlies in the crowd, and I think she killed it with not only her outfit but also her performance.
After Carpenter’s 20-minute set, and some time for clean-up and set-up in between, Vincent Mason took the stage after Carpenter. Mason had a slightly longer set of 30 minutes; he didn’t stray too much from his mic-stand. However, he brought out a harmonica for one of his songs, which I thought was an amusing addition to an opening act.
I saw Mason back in July on tour with Luke Bryan, and this performance absolutely blew that show out of the water to the extent that I’d consider seeing Mason on a headlining tour. The best song from his set was definitely “Damned If I Do.”
The last performer before Davis is a frequent flyer on tour with him, and that’s Mitchell Tenpenny. I’ve seen Tenpenny before, and being that up close this time, compared to being in the back 100s at Beaver Stadium in State College, was a whirlwind. However, I met him in State College, which was an amazing experience on its own.
But a longer set, more songs from him I love, and being three feet away from him was such an amazing experience. My highlight song from his set was singing “Demon or Ghost” with him in the pit, especially since it’s a song he doesn’t play every night. His crowd interaction is amazing, especially as an opener; he even gave a guitar to a young girl next to me.
Then, finally, around 9:25, Jordan Davis came out and played a nearly two-hour set. Davis started his show with the tour’s title track, “Ain’t Enough Road.” This was my third time seeing Davis, and it’s been such a beautiful thing to be able to watch his shows grow and evolve over the last two years, and I can proudly and happily say this has been his best show visually yet.
Vocally, Davis has remained stagnant, and that’s a good thing. He has amazing crowd interaction, whether that’s singing with fans in the pit, shouting out a kid on their birthday, or taking shots with fans in the crowd. Davis is a jack of all trades. My top three songs of the night were “A Little Lime,” as that is one of my favorites off his self-titled EP, which he doesn’t play that often, plus he took a shot of tequila with fans in the crowd.
My numbers two and three are definitely “Turn This Truck Around” and “Bar None” as they are new songs from Davis’s new album. Honorable mentions for “Church In A Chevy” and “Son Of A Gun” as they are some of Davis’s most meaningful songs on his setlist, with “Son Of A Gun” being about his son.
Overall, Jordan Davis never fails to put on an amazing show, and this one was nothing short of that. I can’t wait to see Davis on his next tour because I know it will be better than the last.
