The viral independent animated series “The Amazing Digital Circus” will conclude in a groundbreaking way: with an international theatrical release. Within moments of the announcement, fans began debating the decision’s ramifications.

Glitch Productions, the Australian studio producing the show, announced the theatrical run on April 10 during the trailer for the series’ final episode. According to Fathom Entertainment, the theatrical release will include both the previously released eighth episode, titled “hjsakldfhl,” and the final episode. The final episode and the event overall will be titled “The Last Act.”

Immediately after the trailer premiered, ticket sales went live through Fathom Entertainment. Tickets quickly sold out in many places, leading the company’s website to institute a virtual queue. Initially, the theatrical run was limited to the U.S., Japan, and Latin America, and was later expanded to Australia and Europe.

Fan reactions to the announcement were mixed. The final episode was announced as having a two-week exclusivity window during which the episode would only be available to paying theater customers. This raised several concerns among fans.

“2 weeks without getting spoiled for one of the biggest indie shows of all time is simply not possible without literally not using the internet completely,” said Reddit user u/TRQPL in a post to the r/theamazingdigitalcircus subreddit forum. Their statement reflected the overall consensus that the theatrical exclusivity would lead to unwanted spoilers for fans who are unable to purchase tickets due to geographical location, lack of money or access, or lack of ticket availability.

Other concerns fans brought up included the initial lack of theatrical runs in large regions such as Europe and Glitch Productions’ home country of Australia. Fans also felt betrayed that a show that was previously released simultaneously worldwide for free would now have geographical and financial restrictions, at least for two weeks.

Kevin Lerdwichagul, CEO and co-founder of Glitch Productions, soon posted a letter to social media explaining the process that led to the show’s theatrical premiere and addressing fan concerns. Lerdwichagul stated that the reason for the theatrical release in the first place was to “change how the entire industry views indie animation.”

”The two-week gap came out of a lot of back-and-forth,” Lerdwichagul said on the exclusivity period. “Theaters were originally asking for a minimum of a month. I pushed hard to get it down to just one week or less, but they weren’t willing to budge that far. Two weeks was where we finally landed, and even that was apparently ‘unheard of’ to them.”

Lerdwichagul and Glitch Productions also encouraged fans to personally contact theaters to have the event play in their area. The campaign ultimately allowed the event to expand to Europe and Australia.

The fan response to the letter was generally positive. Top comments on Bluesky expressed relief that the two-week limitation was due to theaters’ insistence on an exclusivity period and not a deliberate choice by Glitch Productions.

“Look, I’m not a fan because I’m old and out of touch,” Bluesky user @dirtywriter.bsky.social commented, “but: two weeks is an astoundingly short window, and the fact that theaters agreed to it blows my mind.”

“The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” will release in theaters on June 4 and run through June 18. The final episode will be released for free on YouTube and on Netflix on June 19.
