This Saturday, Feb. 21, Millersville University hosted its sixth annual Black Excellence Ball. Hosted by the Black Student Union, the annual gala is advertised as “a night dedicated to celebrating culture and community.”

The Black Excellence Ball caps off the week of Feb. 16, known as “BSU Week.” Throughout the week, the Black Student Union hosted several events to celebrate Black History Month, including musical event “Pass the Aux” on Monday, the “BSU’s Got Talent” talent show on Wednesday, and even an invitation on Friday to assist with setup for the Ball, which would take place the following day.

The event took place in the Student Memorial Center’s Multipurpose Room, with small gift bags at the entrance containing words of affirmation and keychains of brass keys, and a red carpet for attendees to have their pictures taken by the photographers in attendance. The room itself was decorated with flowers and balloons, surrounded with glass plaques of important black figures in the community.

“I feel like we could have opened up the floor a little bit more,” said Ball attendee Astrid Miranda-Cosme.“I felt like the decorations and vibes did make up for it because it was a really nice environment and you could tell that it was well thought out to bring the elegance factor.”

Alongside the speakers and Hall of Fame announcements, one of the most anticipated events at the Ball was the Music Production Club’s band

“We do music for anybody and everybody that loves music,” said Jeilyn Patience, the MPC’s Band President. “We do a lot of workshops, production, music mixing, and things of that nature, and we also have a band that is performing here today.”

BSU President Johanna Almonte commented on the best ways to support the BSU and the events taking place at the Ball.

“Just coming out to our events, supporting each other. We are having a special performance from our own MPC…Music Production Club, so I think that’s my favorite for us tonight!.”
