Two suspects are in custody after a Saturday morning bombing at Harvard University.
Just before 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, Harvard University Police Department officers were dispatched to the campus’s Goldenson Building on their Longwood campus after the fire alarm went off. The alarm was sounded by an explosion that took place on the fourth floor. The Boston Fire Department’s Arson Unit arrived on the scene and determined that the explosion may have been intentional, despite the fact that there were no additional devices found in a sweep of the building. While arriving at the site, an HUPD officer claims they saw two people running from the building where the explosion took place.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Harvard Medical School’s Dean of the Faculty of Medicine George Daley, there were no injuries reported, and the Goldenson Building is now fully operational.
“There was no structural damage to the building, and all labs and equipment remain intact,” stated Daley. ”Cleaning crews are on site to help ensure everything is ready for the beginning of the work week tomorrow.”
Daley also released in his statement that HUPD has confirmed that there is no safety threat on campus, but they will be maintaining “an increased presence on the Longwood campus, which we hope will provide an added sense of comfort and security to our community.”
On Nov. 4, two men were arrested for the bombing that took place over the weekend. HUPD and the FBI’s Boston Joint Terroris Task Force identified Logan Patterson and Dominick Cardoza, who were charged with conspiracy to damage after setting off a firework inside a locker within the building. If charged, the two could be facing up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.
