I’ve seen many songs go viral on TikTok, and unbeknownst to people, more and more of those songs are being created with AI. Artists gaining recent popularity are Breaking Rust and Xania Monet. The creator of Xania Monet, Tulisha “Nikki” Jones, went on the record with CBS Morning News, saying, “Xania is an extension of me, so I look at her as a real person.”
Gayle King, who interviewed Jones, said, “Nikki, they think Xania is a real person,” after Jones revealed the lyrics are hers, but Xania has been getting fan letters. King then protested that she’s not a real person, despite Jones’s claims of Xania being an extension of herself.
I think AI is a great tool to use in certain situations, such as advancing medical research. The idea that AI can catch cancer in individuals even earlier than before is absolutely insane and amazing. While that is revolutionary, when AI starts to bleed into the arts, that’s when I start having a problem with it.
Auto-tune is enough in songs, when you are creating a piece of art, whether that’s music or actual art, AI should be avoided because the point of art is creativity. When you are eliminating the identity behind that, it defeats the entire purpose.
Live performances are a crucial part of what an artist does and AI cannot replace a live performance. If an artist cannot sing and perform live, what is the point of the profession?
As a frequent concert goer, a crucial part of liking that artist is, does that artist perform well live? If that artist can’t perform live because they’re not real. Get that AI slop out of here.
Artists that are real however, have also been implementing AI graphics into their show. While not inherently bad, it’s still not great, just put your face on the screen with some graphics and a filter. Save a tree and don’t even bother with it.
Overall, AI needs to stay out of the arts, because you’re eliminating the entire creative aspect behind the craft.
