After a lot hard work and tough training over the winter and spring, the Millersville football team’s spring camp has finally come to an end. They sweat, bled, and had a few injuries here and there, but the team still had fun with everything they did. Most importantly, the team also saw a lot of improvement from last year’s spring camp.

Every year after spring camp the football team has a spring game. This year the game is April 22, on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, and begins promptly at 7 p.m. The game is not a regulation game, but a scrimmage within the team. The team is either split up as offense against defense or divided evenly.

The fall 2010 season marks Millersville’s head coach Greg Colby’s third season with the Marauders. Colby said “All the players did a good job, [are] in good shape, [and] the team [has gotten] better with a lot of improvement. As a group [the team has] gotten more athletic and stronger [than] a year ago,” Colby said.

Colby also said to look for the new guys on the team, like the freshmen, and redshirt freshmen, but warned that “no one is going to outshine the others, it is a team effort.” He also mentioned the improved leadership and coaching on the team saying, “Leadership has been good.” When questioned about his approach to leading the team, Colby said “The coaching is good; I try to be a coach, a little of a father figure, leader, and a friend.”

Although excited about the coming season Colby warned, “It’s hard to predict how the fall will turn out because we are playing ourselves, but [we are] confident we going to win more games.”

Members of the Marauder football team are also excited about the new season. “The team is making the right step, [we are] restoring a winning team, ”Owen King, a junior defensive end, said.

So come out, support the team, and see how the team has improved this spring. See if you notice any changes from last spring if you saw last year spring game. Remember a team cannot win or improve if they do not have encouragement from the fans and students.

Last weekend the Millersville’s softball team was hard at work, playing consecutive double-headers against Shippensburg and West Chester University.

When they last played Shippensburg March 27, the Marauders swept the Raiders in a 6-5, 8-6 win.

Game one on Friday against the Raiders began with one run and three hits for Shippensburg in the first inning. Despite hard work and four hits, Millersville could not cross home plate until the top of the fourth inning. Allison Chew started off with a single, and advanced to second on Jill Golomboski’s bunt. Ally Homa also bunted, allowing Chew to make the turn to third. Lindsay Hosier hit a homerun to send both herself and Chew home, scoring two points for MU.

The Lady Marauders were not through yet, though. Sarah Signore singled out to right field, before Casey Coker sent the ball left. Already on second, Signore stole third, while Coker waited patiently at first. When Amy Kossyk sent a single up the middle, Signore headed home. Anna Libby’s fly ball ended the inning, and the Marauders were ahead 3-1.

In the bottom of the inning, the most Shippensburg could muster was a quick two hits and one run.

Millersville added to their total in the sixth, scoring three runs off four hits. Signore got on base with another single. Coker again followed up with a single, allowing Signore to advance all the way to third.

Kossyk’s at bat brought her two RBIs as both Signore and Keena Elbin, Coker’s pinch runner, scored for the Lady Marauders.

The game continued scoreless all the way to the bottom of the seventh, when the Raiders managed to put one more run on the board. The Marauders took game one with a score of 6-3.

Game two started with a Millersville run. Coker’s RBI brought home Hosier before the teams switched positions. Shippensburg fared similarly, scoring a single run but left three players on base when the inning ended.

Millersville’s answering run in the second was overshadowed by the Raiders impressive three points.

The third inning was scoreless for both teams. Millersville managed to bring a runner home in the fourth. Schneiderrei doubled out to left field, and advanced all the way to third before making the run on a throwing error. Without a run from Shippensburg, the score at the top of the fifth was a manageable 3-4, Shippensburg.

Although the Raiders were not far ahead of the Marauders, the home team could not capitalize on the opportunity to score and handed over the bat without putting any runs on the board. The Raiders refused to make the same mistake and quickly added three runs to their total.

Feeling the pressure, Millersville rallied in the sixth. Golomboksi started the inning with a single passed second base, making it to first before stealing second. She then scored on Schneiderrei’s RBI. Homa stole home later in the inning before Kossyk’s RBI allowed Signore to score. The three runs for Millersville brought them close to catching Shippensburg with a score of 6-7, Raiders.

Although Shippensburg did not score for the remainder of the game, neither did Millersville, and the Marauders lost game two of the doubleheader by a single run.

The split puts the Lady Marauder record at 22-23 for the season so far.

1. St. Louis- Sam Bradford Quarterback (QB) Oklahoma: Franchise QB potential who is too tempting to pass up. With no offensive line to protect the brittle Bradford, he is set up for failure.

1. St. Louis- Sam Bradford Quarterback (QB) Oklahoma: Franchise QB potential who is too tempting to pass up. With no offensive line to protect the brittle Bradford, he is set up for failure.

2. Detroit- Ndamukong Suh Defensive tackle (DT) Nebraska: Arguably the best player in the draft, Suh is perfect for what ails a putrid Lions defense.

3. Tampa Bay- Gerald McCoy DT Oklahoma: Tampa Bay is going to take whichever of the two stud DTs are available. They prefer Suh but will be happy with McCoy who is unbelievably athletic for a big man.

4. Washington- Russell Okung Offensive tackle (OT) Oklahoma St.: Okung is a prototypical left tackle in the NFL; he has size, nimble feet and good intangibles that will have a long career as a starter.

5. Kansas City- Bryan Bulaga OT Iowa: Scott Pioli will agonize over selecting Bulaga or Eric Berry. Bulaga will be the pick because of the importance of left tackle over free safety.

6. Seattle- Trent Williams OT Oklahoma: Williams has the potential to be an elite left tackle in the NFL. He is blessed with tremendous athleticism as well as size.

7. Cleveland- Eric Berry Signed (S) Tennessee: Berry might be the best player in the draft. Mike Holmgren will love to have Berry, who draws Ed Reed comparisons, in his secondary for many years to come.

8. Oakland- Anthony Davis OT Rutgers: Al Davis makes projecting the Raiders’ draft picks nearly impossible. Davis has unlimited potential and athleticism, but is lazy and has off the field issues. Sounds like a Raider special.

9. Buffalo- Jimmy Clausen QB Notre Dame: They would love one of the top three tackles to fall into their laps, Clausen could turn the franchise around.

10. Jacksonville- Rolando McClain Middle linebacker (MLB) Alabama: McClain will give the Jags a playmaking MLB and bump Daryl Smith outside where he is better suited.

11. Denver- Dez Bryant Wide receiver (WR) Oklahoma St.: I don’t think Josh Mcdaniels wants to deal with another troublesome wide out, but with McClain off the board they have to take Bryant.

12. Miami- Dan Williams Nose tackle (NT) Tennessee: A reach, but nose tackle is a huge need for the Dolphins with Jason Ferguson facing an eight game suspension.

13. San Francisco- Joe Haden Cornerback (CB) Florida: Haden is the best corner in the draft and will help a weak and aging secondary.

14. Seattle- Derrick Morgan Defensive end(DE)/ Outside linebacker(OLB) Georgia Tech- They have a huge hole at defensive end, Morgan fits perfectly. Spiller will be tempting.

15. New York Giants- Sergio Kindle OLB Texas: Kindle is a physical specimen with favorable comparisons to Brian Orakpo. The Giants will be praying Rolando McClain falls to them.

16. Tennessee- Kyle Wilson CB Boise St.: Wilson has been climbing draft boards around the league. He can be the playmaker the Titans desperately need in the secondary opposite Cortland Finnegan.

17. San Francisco- CJ Spiller Running back (RB) Clemson: Spiller will be too good to pass up for the 49ers. They need a right tackle but they will address this in the second round.

18. Pittsburgh- Mike Iupati Offensive lineman (OL) Idaho: Iupati is by far the best interior offensive lineman in the draft and he can also play tackle. He will be a staple at guard or tackle for a long time in Pittsburgh.

19. Atlanta- Jason Pierre Paul DE South Florida- Boom or bust product that could have an enormous impact for the Falcons.

20. Houston- Patrick Robinson CB Florida St.: Dunta Robinson’s departure left a huge void in the secondary that will have to see Peyton Manning twice a year.

21. Cincinnati- Jermaine Gresham Tight end (TE) Oklahoma St.: Gresham will give Palmer another target and should help the Bengals offense become dynamic again.

22. New England- Brandon Graham DE/OLB Michigan- Graham is a Belichick type of player, a hard worker who will thrive as a Patriot. Very similar to Lamar Woodley.

23. Green Bay- Jerry Hughes OLB TCU- Hughes will be a great compliment to Clay Matthews at outside linebacker. Hughes will be a solid pass rusher.

24. Philadelphia- Earl Thomas S Texas: The Birds need to replace Brian Dawkins and will be delighted if Thomas falls into their laps.

25. Baltimore- Jared Odrick DE Penn St.: Perfect fit, great compliment to Haloti Ngata.

26. Arizona- Charles Brown OT USC: Brown will be a bit of a project but he has the potential to be a very good one.

27. Dallas- Taylor Mays S USC: Mays is one of the most publicized players in the draft. Hits like a linebacker, runs like a defensive back.

28. San Diego- Ryan Matthews Running back (RB) Fresno St: The perfect storm for the Chargers, they get their back of the future. Terrance Cody will be a thought too.

29. New York Jets- Carlos Dunlap DE Florida: Has the potential to be elite, if he gets motivated Rex Ryan has a gem.

30. Minnesota- Maurkice Pouncey Center (C) Florida: Will be a great pro for many years to come. Adrian Peterson should be ecstatic.

31. Indianapolis- Roger Saffold OT Indiana: Saffold has climbed the boards recently and while he is a reach, they need to keep Manning upright.

32. New Orleans: Sean Weatherspoon OLB Missouri: Could be a steal in the draft. Great all around player.

Saturday, April 15 the Lady Marauders traveled to East Stroudsburg University to face the Warriors. The game left the Marauders disappointed. ESU defeated the Marauders 14-7.

“The team played better, improving in our draw control possessions and playing fairly even with ESU in caused turnovers and ground balls,” the head coach, Barbara Waltman said.

The Warriors started the first half strong. They went out to the field and had three goals within the first 16 minutes. Then Kelsey Schmoltze made the first score for the Marauders with an assist from Brittney Long. The Warriors then managed to get through the Marauder’s defense and score another goal. Lady Marauder Liz Weekley came down the field and made another goal a little more than a minute later. The Warriors made two more goals, and then the last score of the game was made by the Millersville’s Brianna Huynh.

With the first half of the game over the score was 6-3, Warriors. The Marauders continue to struggle with turnovers; the first half left them with 19. “ESU capitalized off our turnovers, creating scoring opportunities for themselves,” Coach Waltman said.
The second half of the game was a stronger half for the Marauders, even though the Warriors made the first three goals. The Lady Marauders made a comeback though with two back-to-back shots. One was made by Ashley Mogle with an assist from Katie DiRico; the other came from Morgan Mangiaruga. The Warriors made another three shots back-to-back but the Marauders were not having that. DiRico put up a fight and scored with help from Mary Houtmann. The Warriors came back at the Marauders with two more shots. Schmoltze then made the last goal for the Marauders and the last goal of the game.
Coach Waltman said “In the second half of the game our offense started moving the ball well which led to some picture-perfect goals.”

With the game over the Maruaders had a total of 36 turnovers, and Coach Waltman said they are “what cost us the game.”

The Lady Marauders have things to work on for their upcoming games. “We want to carry that ball movement and intensity into our games this week,” coach Waltman said, “If we can do that and minimize our turnovers, we should have two good games this week.”

With two games left this season, the Marauders can improve on their game and try to reduce the number of turnovers. Let’s wish the Marauders the best of luck with their last two games.

We’re finally here. After a grueling stretch of 82 games, the top 16 teams in the NBA this season have been established and the contenders have separated themselves from the pretenders. However, each remaining team has work to do as they compete to become the sole survivors when all is said and done with the 2009-2010 season. So as we march our way to the finals I will do my best, for you faithful readers, to narrow down series winners round by round until the championship. Let’s start things off with the first round in each conference.
East:
(1) Cleveland vs. (8) Chicago
The Bulls will get only as far as Derrick Rose carries them. That might be only one victory this round if Cleveland falls asleep for a game. The Bulls do not have a big enough frontcourt to contain Shaquille O’Neal, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, or J.J. Hickson and they do not have enough athletes to tame Lebron James, Antawn Jamison and Jay Williams. Cavs take the series 4-1.
(2) Orlando vs. (7) Charlotte
This is an interesting match up. Charlotte proved after the first game that they can compete with Dwight Howard. With a rotation of Theo Ratliff, Tyson Chandler, and Nazr Mohammad, they can pester Howard and force someone else on the Magic to step up. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Jameer Nelson did just that and torched them for 32 points in game one. With other options in Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis, the Bobcats will not be able to keep up, especially now that Stephen Jackson is hobbled with a hyperextended knee after colliding with Gerald Wallace early in the first game. Magic 4-2.
(3) Atlanta vs. (6) Milwaukee
This would have been a bit tougher to pick if Andrew Bogut did not suffer the most disgusting knee injury since Shaun Livingston destroyed his knee. Hawks 4-0.
(4) Boston vs. (5) Miami
Say all you want about how much of a fool Kevin Garnett was for elbowing Quentin Richardson. I will defend the action no matter how much you think a veteran should learn to restrain himself. Garnett may be suspended for one game but he might have lit a much needed fire under the proverbial butt of the Celts. Dwayne Wade will put up a fight but he does not have a supporting cast good enough to compete. Celtics 4-2.
West:
(1) Los Angeles vs. (8) Oklahoma City
The entertaining young up-and-comers versus the perennial power of the Lakers. As the Lakers proved in their first game, they just have too much fire power on offense and are a very solid defensive team as well. They are the most well-rounded team in the league. The Thunder will have to wait a few more years until they can compete with the likes of these Lakers. LA 4-1.
(2) Dallas vs. (7) San Antonio
San Antonio has too many players with too much mileage on the odometer. While they played well at the end of the season, thanks to a certain Argentinian, they are no match for a well-rounded Mavs team. Dallas 4-2.
(3) Phoenix vs. (6) Portland
Portland is going to miss Brandon Roy and not make it out of the first round for his return. While they took game one, the Trail Blazers cannot contend with Phoenix if Stoudemire stays out of foul trouble. However, it is already apparent how much the Suns are going to miss Robin Lopez. Phoenix wins in seven 4-3.
(4) Denver vs. (5) Utah
Denver has not been the same since George Karl had to step down due to throat cancer. However, injuries to Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko are too much to overcome for a once promising Jazz club.
Denver 4-3.
East Round 2:
(1) Cleveland vs. (4) Boston
Boston’s age will definitely show; Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins will not be able to carry Boston in this one. Cleveland has too much talent and energy for a semi-lethargic Boston club. Cleveland 4-1.
(2) Orlando vs. (3) Atlanta
This will be a great showdown. Yes, I know the Magic manhandled the Hawks in all but one game during the regular season and won the series 3-1, but I like Atlanta’s chemistry. They are a deeper team than the Magic in my eyes, and I believe Al Horford can bang around with Howard. Hawks win a close one 4-3.
West Round 2:
(1) Los Angeles vs. (4) Denver
This will be a tough matchup for the Lakers. However, they have more scoring options than the Nuggets and don’t have to rely on a couple of their players to score points; they have at least five options in Kobe, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest, and Lamar Odom. Lakers win 4-2
(2) Dallas vs. (3) Phoenix
This is the series where the Suns will definitely miss Lopez. With Gordon Haywood and Erick Dampier to shut down Stoudemire, the Suns don’t stand a chance. They’ll compete for a few games, but in the end it won’t be enough. Dallas 4-2.
East Conference Finals:
(1) Cleveland vs. (3) Atlanta
The Hawks steal another one. Josh Smith is long and athletic enough to keep up with Lebron. James cannot win this one on his own and I do not think Jamison or Mo Williams will help bail him out against a deep Hawks team. Jamal Crawford will be the x-factor with his ability to create his own shot and Atlanta wins another hard fought series. Hawks 4-3.
West Conference Finals:
(1) Los Angeles vs. (2) Dallas
Dallas will prove to a difficult matchup for the Lakers. They matchup well at every position. This one comes down to two of the game’s best clutch performers in Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki. However, I feel as though the Lakers have the edge in Kobe, and are overall the better team on defense.
Finals:
Lakers vs Hawks
As much as I hate to say it, the Lakers take the cake. I hate the Lakers, I do not like Kobe, and I especially do not like Ron Artest, but I just don’t see them losing this one. They are a deep team with so many options they’re almost impossible to defend against. LA has finals experience which trumps a less experienced Hawks team. Lakers easily defeat a worn out Atlanta team 4-1.

The Marauders went into the weekend series against East Stroudsburg still looking to clinch a PSAC playoff spot. However, ESU swept Millersville in the four-game series, extending the Marauders losing streak to six games.

In Friday’s doubleheader at ESU the Marauders struggled to show any signs of life at the plate as the team was only able to put up three hits, two came from senior Derek Kline who also scored the only run for Millersville on an RBI from senior Kent Gerdes.

Senior Ryan Stauffer threw another complete game for Millersville, however, with the lack of offensive he was unable to hold on for the win. Stauffer gave up four runs on nine hits.

Game two in Friday’s match-up was much of the same story for Millersville as the team once again were only able to cross one run, and came up with four hits. Senior Ryan McCormick had two of those hits and scored on an RBI from Senior Corey Phelan.

Millersville kept game two close as ESU was only up 2-1 going into the sixth inning. Millersville then gave the ball over to closer Zach Eckley, junior, who gave up three runs in the sixth to give ESU a 5-1 lead, which would be all they would need as they shut down Millersville in the top half of the seventh.

The two teams then traveled to Millersville on Saturday to finish up the four game series, but the home field advantage was not enough to help Millersville. For the fourth straight game Millersville was only able to score one run. Kline took the mound in game one and held ESU to six hits and three runs.

Game two saw Millersville breaking away from their recent struggles at the plate as the team put up 12 hits and four runs. However, ESU exploded in the third inning, scoring five runs, and again in the fifth inning where they scored four more.

Senior Forrest Mengle was given the loss as he gave up nine runs and nine hits in his four innings. With the loss, Mengle drops to a record of 3-3. No Millersville pitcher was able to shut down the dynamic offensive of ESU, as all four pitchers gave up at least one run.

Millersville was led at the plate by freshmen Jeff Heisey who went three for three. Heisey also had two RBIs and scored twice himself. Redshirt freshmen Ryan Chesler and senior Corey Phelan also had multiple hits in game two.

With the current six game losing streak, Millersville has dropped to fifth in the PSAC East standings. Kutztown and West Chester have already clinched their playoff spots, but the third and fourth spots are still up for grabs.

Unfortunately for the Marauders it will not be easy to clinch one of the final two spots. Mansfield and ESU are currently third and fourth respectively. Both those teams also have tiebreaker advantage over Millersville, who only has one conference series remaining against Kutztown, who lead the PSAC East with a conference record of 14-6 and an overall record of 30-9.

Millersville needs to pull out the upset four game sweep over Kutztown. In addition to that, Mansfield and ESU face each other to finish the season, which will be the final factor on whether or not Millersville can make the playoffs. If Mansfield or East Stroudsburg can pull out the sweep of each other, that should be enough for the Marauders to see a place in the PSAC playoffs.

Millersville takes on Kutztown in an away double-header Friday, April 23 and a home double-header Saturday to finish the season. Both games are set to start at 1 p.m.

The weekend of April 15 – 18 in downtown Lancaster was quite a boisterous one. Throughout the course of three days, more than 175 bands were all over the city. From every building and street corner to the Marriott’s Freedom Hall Convention Center and Chameleon Club, music was a force this weekend.

The second-annual Launch Music Conference, founded by Rick Gadd (of Decadent Suite Records) and Jeremy Weiss (of CI Records), was a combination of networking, live entertainment, and an extensive amount of music industry knowledge led by many notable professionals in the industry.

Launch had something for musicians and non-musicians alike. Fans could hang out, talk to bands one-on-one, and stick around for several shows later in the day. Music industry professionals had the opportunity to catch up with one another and meet up-and-coming artists. Students were provided with an educational view of the industry and the opportunity to connect with bands and professionals on an informative and intimate level.

A few of the bands included Sudden Ascent, Digital Elvis, Johnny Action Figure, Darry Miller and the Veil, Texas in July, An Early Ending, Free the Fallen, With Life in Mind, This or the Apocalypse, The Beggar Folk, Greene Reveal, Kingsfoil, Ace Augustine, and more. A few Millersville University student bands were also included in the lineup on Saturday evening – Yesterday’s Listeners and Ghost House.

Speaking to bassist Matt Corey of “Greene Reveal”, he was thrilled to see how popular the Lancaster music scene was. He was also grateful that such an extensive conference was held to promote local and state-wide bands.

Panels, workshops, and seminars were held by industry professionals in an effective and informal manner – many of these individuals were open to all questions and genuinely wanted feedback from audience members. A few of the many speakers included Tom Bejgrowicz from Man Alive Design (who designed for bands like The Fray), Matt Friction from “The Pink Spiders,” David Silbaugh (the Rock Committee Chair and Chapter – Board Advisor for the Grammys), and Bruce Warren (WXPN Program Director and Executive Producer of the World Café). The speakers were honest, blunt, and refused to sugarcoat their responses. They were also incredibly approachable and open to meeting people post-discussion.

The informality of the conference is what made the weekend so memorable and beneficial. The connection made between students, fans, professionals, and musicians was the whole point to the conference. It was an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge of the music industry, share stories with others, and support local bands. It was an ideal weekend to join with those who share in the passion and love of music.

Launch Music Conference was something that should not have been missed. The excitement could be felt through every live performance and seen in every face. It was a busy weekend, but I cannot wait to see what Launch has in store for next year’s conference.

Jordan’s residency at Millersville began Monday April 19 and continues through the 21. During her stay here, she is filling her time as tirelessly as possible. Throughout the week, she will meet with faculty and students, conduct lectures, discuss the highs and lows of the career of a musician, hold a question and answer session with music majors, participate in a music master class, and work personally with the Millersville University Jazz Band.

Born in 1928 in Detroit, jazz singer Sheila Jordan grew up in Summerhill, Pennsylvania. Restless and wanting to go back to her roots, she returned to the motor city in the early 1940s. Once there, she found her footing as a singer and performed in the trio Skeeter, Mitch, and Jean (she was “Jean”—her middle name is Jeanette), circuiting the jazz clubs of the era.

In 1951, the singer moved to New York City, where she studied music theory under Lennie Tristano and Charles Mingus, some of the greatest jazz composers of the day. By the early 1960s, she was a regular at places like the Page Three Club in Greenwich Village, and had made it enough to earn a living out of jazz music. In 1962, her debut album Portrait of Sheila was recorded under the Blue Note label.

After that success, Jordan withdrew from the music scene to take care of her daughter. For years, she worked as a legal secretary, putting the artist in her by the wayside. In 1975, she revived her career with the release of Confirmation, only her second studio album. Since then, she has released twenty solo albums, some of them live recordings of club performances. Known for her talent with lyrics, she has remained a staple in the jazz scene. Commentator Scott Yanow has hailed her, “one of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers.”

Most recently, she has been performing. For the latter half of March, she had a tour of Germany. A couple weeks later, she was doing gigs in New York City. After giving herself a second to breathe, she now finds herself at the Millersville campus.

To top off her residency, she is headlining a concert on Wednesday night. At 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the Student Memorial Center, “Sheila Jordan and Friends,” a musical collaboration between Jordan and the Millersville Jazz Band will begin.

It will be an exciting musical event; along with her countless experience in jazz music, Jordan is especially known for her skills with lyrical and vocal improvisation, always a valuable skill in the unpredictability of jazz rhythms. For someone with her level of expertise, students should expect quite a show.

Tickets are free for Millersville students, $5 for seniors, $10 general admission, and $20 for club seats.

"Brilliant Traces" by Cindy Lou Johnson is a story about two people trapped together during a white-out in Alaska.

“Brilliant Traces” by Cindy Lou Johnson is a story about two people trapped together during a white-out in Alaska. During this white-out, these two people share their stories with one another, stories that have made them who they are. On top of that, a little romance ensues as heated arguments turn into romantic impulsive moments.

Jeff Wolfthal, a junior, plays Henry, a man who has been through struggles in his life that have caused him to distance himself from life and people. He lives like a hermit in Alaska, leaving only to work on an oil rig. Rosannah, played by sophomore Mariah Mammas, is lost and confused. She has just left her wedding, and shows up at Henry’s door looking for salvation from the blizzard.

Throughout the course of the play, Henry and Rosannah reveal to each other, as well as the audience, why they are the way they are. Struggles and tragedy are definitely the source of this drama. What is interesting is that the characters seem to be meant for each other, even if they do not realize it at first.

The lights really add to the show, you could tell when a character was in an emotional state because a blue or red light would encompass them while they were speaking. The wind played on and off throughout the show, during certain monologues, it really added to the feeling of eeriness.

Both actors are very talented. They had the audience’s full attention as they told their stories. Both Mariah and Jeff have been seen on the Rafter’s stage before, but this was, for both of them, the first time in a starring role. As the stage manager I have seen them both progress so much since auditions and I am confident, although maybe slightly biased, in saying that these two actors were by far the best choice for these roles.

This show was directed by Michael Swanson, who is a professor at Elizabethtown College. His knowledge and visions for this show were very inspiring and the show definitely shows this. He pushed the actors to feel their characters, which is evident in the final product.

Another very interesting part of the show was the involvement of stage combat. For those of you out there who may not be so into theatre, I think the stage combat really gives this show something extra. Rosannah isn’t afraid to throw Henry around, which is something Rafter’s has not seen in quite some time.

Opening weekend was a little slow, ticket wise, but the actors put on a show for the audience that was as if the house was packed. If you missed this past weekend’s shows, you are still in luck. There is still time for you to catch a show next weekend. Rafter’s theatre will be showing Brilliant Traces again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm and on Sunday at 2 pm. If you miss this show, you are not only missing a good story, but the last chance at theatre for this semester, so do your best to make it out.
