The Day of Silence is a day to recognize the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgendered) community and their efforts to prevent harassment towards individuals around the country. Millersville took part in the event this year, with an outpour of support from many students on campus. This effort taken by young people from all over the nation has helped many young Americans understand how it feels to be shunned or discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or lifestyle.
Life as an open homosexual has changed drastically over the decades. It was not long ago that an open homosexual would be persecuted and harassed regardless of where he or she resided. Being thankful for the age I have grown up in, there is still far to go and it has become a slow process.
While at home over Winter Break, I could not help but overhear talk and news about the gay marriage debate. It occurred to me that the argument against gay marriage has many holes. Some claim that gay marriage makes a mockery of what they call “real marriage.” Others say that Christianity dictates that the same sex persons should not lay together, so they definitely should not be married.
Officially signed by President Obama on the 22nd of October, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act provided some much needed and long awaited succor for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community at a time when hate crimes against it are unusually high.
