We’re finally here. After a grueling stretch of 82 games, the top 16 teams in the NBA this season have been established and the contenders have separated themselves from the pretenders. However, each remaining team has work to do as they compete to become the sole survivors when all is said and done with the 2009-2010 season. So as we march our way to the finals I will do my best, for you faithful readers, to narrow down series winners round by round until the championship. Let’s start things off with the first round in each conference.
East:
(1) Cleveland vs. (8) Chicago
The Bulls will get only as far as Derrick Rose carries them. That might be only one victory this round if Cleveland falls asleep for a game. The Bulls do not have a big enough frontcourt to contain Shaquille O’Neal, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, or J.J. Hickson and they do not have enough athletes to tame Lebron James, Antawn Jamison and Jay Williams. Cavs take the series 4-1.
(2) Orlando vs. (7) Charlotte
This is an interesting match up. Charlotte proved after the first game that they can compete with Dwight Howard. With a rotation of Theo Ratliff, Tyson Chandler, and Nazr Mohammad, they can pester Howard and force someone else on the Magic to step up. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Jameer Nelson did just that and torched them for 32 points in game one. With other options in Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis, the Bobcats will not be able to keep up, especially now that Stephen Jackson is hobbled with a hyperextended knee after colliding with Gerald Wallace early in the first game. Magic 4-2.
(3) Atlanta vs. (6) Milwaukee
This would have been a bit tougher to pick if Andrew Bogut did not suffer the most disgusting knee injury since Shaun Livingston destroyed his knee. Hawks 4-0.
(4) Boston vs. (5) Miami
Say all you want about how much of a fool Kevin Garnett was for elbowing Quentin Richardson. I will defend the action no matter how much you think a veteran should learn to restrain himself. Garnett may be suspended for one game but he might have lit a much needed fire under the proverbial butt of the Celts. Dwayne Wade will put up a fight but he does not have a supporting cast good enough to compete. Celtics 4-2.
West:
(1) Los Angeles vs. (8) Oklahoma City
The entertaining young up-and-comers versus the perennial power of the Lakers. As the Lakers proved in their first game, they just have too much fire power on offense and are a very solid defensive team as well. They are the most well-rounded team in the league. The Thunder will have to wait a few more years until they can compete with the likes of these Lakers. LA 4-1.
(2) Dallas vs. (7) San Antonio
San Antonio has too many players with too much mileage on the odometer. While they played well at the end of the season, thanks to a certain Argentinian, they are no match for a well-rounded Mavs team. Dallas 4-2.
(3) Phoenix vs. (6) Portland
Portland is going to miss Brandon Roy and not make it out of the first round for his return. While they took game one, the Trail Blazers cannot contend with Phoenix if Stoudemire stays out of foul trouble. However, it is already apparent how much the Suns are going to miss Robin Lopez. Phoenix wins in seven 4-3.
(4) Denver vs. (5) Utah
Denver has not been the same since George Karl had to step down due to throat cancer. However, injuries to Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko are too much to overcome for a once promising Jazz club.
Denver 4-3.
East Round 2:
(1) Cleveland vs. (4) Boston
Boston’s age will definitely show; Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins will not be able to carry Boston in this one. Cleveland has too much talent and energy for a semi-lethargic Boston club. Cleveland 4-1.
(2) Orlando vs. (3) Atlanta
This will be a great showdown. Yes, I know the Magic manhandled the Hawks in all but one game during the regular season and won the series 3-1, but I like Atlanta’s chemistry. They are a deeper team than the Magic in my eyes, and I believe Al Horford can bang around with Howard. Hawks win a close one 4-3.
West Round 2:
(1) Los Angeles vs. (4) Denver
This will be a tough matchup for the Lakers. However, they have more scoring options than the Nuggets and don’t have to rely on a couple of their players to score points; they have at least five options in Kobe, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest, and Lamar Odom. Lakers win 4-2
(2) Dallas vs. (3) Phoenix
This is the series where the Suns will definitely miss Lopez. With Gordon Haywood and Erick Dampier to shut down Stoudemire, the Suns don’t stand a chance. They’ll compete for a few games, but in the end it won’t be enough. Dallas 4-2.
East Conference Finals:
(1) Cleveland vs. (3) Atlanta
The Hawks steal another one. Josh Smith is long and athletic enough to keep up with Lebron. James cannot win this one on his own and I do not think Jamison or Mo Williams will help bail him out against a deep Hawks team. Jamal Crawford will be the x-factor with his ability to create his own shot and Atlanta wins another hard fought series. Hawks 4-3.
West Conference Finals:
(1) Los Angeles vs. (2) Dallas
Dallas will prove to a difficult matchup for the Lakers. They matchup well at every position. This one comes down to two of the game’s best clutch performers in Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki. However, I feel as though the Lakers have the edge in Kobe, and are overall the better team on defense.
Finals:
Lakers vs Hawks
As much as I hate to say it, the Lakers take the cake. I hate the Lakers, I do not like Kobe, and I especially do not like Ron Artest, but I just don’t see them losing this one. They are a deep team with so many options they’re almost impossible to defend against. LA has finals experience which trumps a less experienced Hawks team. Lakers easily defeat a worn out Atlanta team 4-1.

On Feb. 27, the Lady Marauders faced the Mansfield Mountaineers on the basketball court in Pucillo gymnasium. The met only to blow the Mountaineers away with a 72-42 win.

The first shot of the game was a three-pointer made by Ashley Moyer, which was one of many throughout the game. Moyer’s score was followed by two more from Dominique Stroman, with an assist by freshman Mashira Newman. Newman also assisted Jenna Craig with the next two points before she began her turn at the net.

Newman came on strong. The first shot she sank was assisted by Stroman, which brought the score to 11-0 three minutes into the first half. Then the Mountaineers started scoring.

The first two baskets made by Mansfield were from senior Mallory Moore, followed by a three-pointer by Nicole Pender.

Newman shot a three-pointer, assisted by Moyer, and then Stroman made a shot herself, but was then fouled, resulting in two points.

Craig then began her rule of the court. She made four straight shots, one of which was a free-throw. Moyer made another perfect three-pointer. Coming off a rebound shot, Green received two free-throws. Jessica Beswick grabbed two points with the assist from Aiesha Bellamy.

However, arguably the best shot of the game came at the end of the first half. With just one second left on the clock, the ball was passed to Moyer. She raced the clock, got to half court and made an amazing shot bringing the Marauders lead 15 points.

Throughout the first half Newman played man-to-man defense very well. She stuck to her opponent and never left them alone. As lead scorers, Craig, Stroman, and Moyer were on the top of their games in the first half. The score was 37-22 at halftime.

The second half of the game was the strongest for the Lady Marauders. Head Coach Mary Fleig said during the second half “We stepped our game up. We stepped up to the plate; to our level.”

Stroman began the second half with a basket assisted by Newman. Mansfield could not overcome the dominance of the Marauders on the court during this half. Craig caught her own rebound, and shot again with the swish of the basket. She then missed a jumper, but that was rebounded by Moyer. Stroman came in with a good jumper, and then Moyer made another three-point basket. Three minutes into the second half, the Marauders were in the lead by 22 points.

Then Mansfield was finally able to score. Tegan Atallah made a jumper. Then a war began between the two teams. Raquel Green made a jumper with an assist from Stroman. The Mountaineers then retaliated with a three-point basket by Atallah, but that did not discourage the Marauders. Stroman stomped on them with a jumper assisted by Newman. Then Mallory Hafer of the Mountaineers scored a three-point basket. Out of nowhere MU’s Emily Balogh came up and shot a perfect layup, but the war was not over.

Moyer came in with one of her three-pointers, bringing the score to 53-30 with a little over 12 minutes to go in the second half.

Manfield’s Moore, came back with a two-point basket, trying to catch up to the unstoppable Marauders. Gabrielle Styles made a basket, taking the Marauder lead back. With just over 10 minutes left in the second half, Stroman made a good layup bringing the Marauders to a 57-31 lead.

Craig came through with two more back-to-back shots. Green made a basket, which made the score even more spread out. The Marauders took the lead by 30 points, 61-31.

Julia Stevenson did not let that break the Mountaineer’s spirit, however. She pulled off two points with the assist of Nicole Pender, but Green was not having that. She came through with a perfect layup, bringing the Lady Marauders to a 30-point lead yet again.

Stevenson was fouled by Green, which gave her two foul shots that upped Mansfield’s score, but it was not enough. Monica Newman stepped into the game and brought the Marauders back to their 30 point lead.

Lady Marauder Miesha Cousins was then fouled by Stevenson which landed her two foul shots. The Mountaineers were enraged. Hafer shot a 3-pointer with the assist of her sophomore teammate Meredith Hafer. Carrie Shefey came into the game and shot through the Mountaineers defense and landed a layup. Less than a minute later she got a jumper, bringing the Marauders into a 33-point lead, 71-38.

Mansfield was not happy. Senior Hafer scored a three-pointer, but Mountaineer Emma Lacey fouled Raquel Flemings, bringing the Marauders back to a 31-point lead.

The last basket of the game did nothing. Flemings fouled Syndee Reeves, and that shot landed the Mountaineers a final score of 42 points. Their total was nowhere near the Marauders who left the Mountaineers in the dust with a 72-42 victory.

“We started out rocky, but we had fun with it. It was a good win for the seniors.” Forward Aurielle Mosley said. The win also gave the Lady Marauders even more confidence, “This game got us pumped. We’re ready for Tuesday. This game got us motivated,” said freshman guard Jessica Beswick.

The Marauders have a playoff game this coming Tuesday. “It felt good to finish [the PSAC] East. We have to come ready for Tuesday. It’s going to be a tough playoff game,” Sheffey said. The Marauders face as of yet an unnamed opponent on Tuesday night at home court in Pucillo during the PSAC quarterfinals.

Female: Raquel Green
Q: What is your major?
A: “I am majoring in History because I am a critical thinker. I am a very detail-oriented person and like to think outside of the box. My ideal job would be to travel the world and do research related to African-American history.”

Q: How long have you been playing basketball?
A: “I started playing when I was 13, in sixth grade.”

Q: How did you become involved with basketball?
A: “I grew up in a city, so basketball was always everywhere. I also lived right beside a basketball court, so every day when I went outside it was right there. Playing sports runs in my family, but I am the first female to play basketball.”

Q: What has been the highlight of your season (so far)?
A: “Beating California University was the highlight of my season. We lost to them three games in a row during the playoffs last year, so I was glad to beat them this season.”

Q: What are you looking forward to for the remainder of the season?
A: “My goal is that we will not only be able to make it farther than we did last year, but to also try and win PSAC.”

Q: Besides playing basketball, how do you spend your free time?
A: “In my free time I enjoy relaxing, traveling, and spending time with my family. I especially like traveling with my family. Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go is London and I am hoping to go there after graduation.”

Q: Do you follow basketball professionally?
A: “Not really, it is very seldom that I watch professional basketball, but I do sometimes watch men’s college basketball. I don’t necessarily have a favorite team; I just like to watch good games.”

Q: Who is your favorite player?
A: “I don’t have a current favorite player, but a past player and someone I admire was my middle school AAU coach, Yolanda Laney. She was like a second mother to me because she not only helped me on the court, but off the court as well. She made sure I kept up with my school work and taught me things other than just basketball, like important life lessons.”

Q: What do you plan to do after you graduate?
A: “Right after I graduate from Millersville in the spring, I plan on going to graduate school. I would like to go to either Temple or Howard University for my masters in either Sports Management or History.”

Male: Miles Gallagher

Q: What is your major?
A: “I have two majors: One in History and another in Government and Political affairs.”

Q: How long have you been playing baseball?
A: “I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember. I started playing t-ball in elementary school and I have been playing ever since then.”

Q: How did you become involved with baseball?
A: “My dad tried to keep me and all my brothers active. He never pushed me towards one sport, but I enjoyed baseball so I continued with it. I tired just about every sport but in high school I ended up choosing to stick with baseball and basketball.”

Q: What has been the highlight of your season (so far)?
A: “It’s still really early in the season, so it’s hard to tell what will end up happening. Winning this past weekend really helped and definitely boosts our morale from losing the prior weekend.”

Q: What are you looking forward to in the remainder of the season?
A: “The team has really matured after our first weekend and we have a lot of talent back, so I have high hopes for this season. Right now we are focusing on getting into our PSAC games and are just going to take it game by game. I’m hoping we will win PSAC again, like we did two years ago, and then try our best to make it to regionals.”

Q: Besides playing baseball, how do you spend your free time?
A: “When I’m not playing baseball I spend my time studying and hanging out with friends. I normally don’t have too much free time so I spend most of it just relaxing and getting sleep.”

Q: Do you follow baseball professionally?
A: “Yes, I have always been a baseball fan. I really enjoy watching the Phillies.”

Q: Who is your favorite player?
A: “Growing up, my favorite player was Michael Jordan (for basketball and then also baseball). I admired him for his winning attitude and leadership skills.”

Q: What do you plan to do after you graduate?
A: “I am taking a constitutional law class right now and really enjoy it, so I am thinking about going to law school after I graduate from Millersville. I’m planning on taking a year off to study for the LSAT and find a job to help build my resume before pursuing law school.”

The Marauders once again came up short losing 76-68 in the last game of the season against Mansfield Saturday afternoon. The loss ends Millersville’s season with a record of 8-19 overall and only 3-11 in conference play. The team also ends the season losing four straight games as well as a dismal 1-9 in their last ten games.

Despite the disappointing ending to their season, senior Jason Blake made sure to end his career at Millersville with a bang. Blake scored a career high of 23 points in Saturday’s game. He also added seven rebounds to his game totals.

The Marauders got out to a slow start and faced a nine point deficit early in the game with 13:01 on the clock. Mansfield continued to rally against the struggling Marauders, stretching their lead to double digits with 7:27 remaining the in the first half.

Mansfield was able to hold on to their lead over Millersville for the remainder of the first half, even seeing a 15 point lead before Millersville’s Alen Ahmetovic made a lay-up with one second left in the first half, cutting the Mansfield lead to 13.

As the two teams got under way for the second half, Mansfield was able to keep a hold of their lead until senior Palmer McDurfee made a lay up with 14:22 left in the game, which started a 12-3 run for the Marauders. During the run Blake added a key three point shot to help bring the motivation in favor of the home team.

With 11:03 remaining on the clock Millersville was able to cut the Mansfield lead down to only three points. However, Mansfield was able to expand on their slim lead going up by as much as 15 points with only 3:55 left in the game.

Millersville made a strong run with only a few minutes left in their season, making another impressive run scoring eight unanswered points. The run cut their deficit down to seven with a score of 69-62 with 1:43 remaining in the game.

Although the Marauders made a valiant attempt to close the gap further, Mansfield proved too strong to stop. The Marauders came within five points with 52 seconds remaining in the game, on a lay-up by McDurfee, but Mansfield held on and finished the game up by eight points with a final score of 76-68.

Blake led the scoring with 23 points. Sophomore Mike Seibert also added 13 and Ahmetovic added 10 points.

With the win Mansfield was able grab the number one seed in the PSAC tournament in the Eastern Division. Millersville failed to make a playoff bid this season. In Fred Thompson’s 12 seasons as the head coach for Millersville, the team only missed the playoffs five times. This is also the second straight losing season for the Marauders.

The team has a lot of work in the off season, but the team will have some key players back next season including Seibert who has proved a vital member of the team this season.

This week we have selected sophomore Mike Seibert as the male athlete of week. Seibert is a guard on the men’s basketball team. He had a very impressive week on the basketball court, with a highlight game on Monday, Feb. 15, at home against Shippensburg.

In the game, Seibert put up a career high 26 points in Millersville’s win over the Raiders. Seibert helped the Marauders snap a five game losing streak by beating the Raiders 79-71.

On Wednesday, Seibert continued his impressive scoring by having another double digit scoring game. In a game against rival Cheyney, Seibert did all he could to keep the Marauders in the game.

Seibert completed his third straight double digit scoring game against the Huskies of Bloomsburg. Seibert led Millersville in the game with 14 points, unfortunately the team could not pull out a win.

With the basketball season almost over, Seibert will be a key component to the team next season. Throughout the year he has proved to be one of the more reliable shooters on the team and with the departure of graduating senior guards Jason Blake and Plamer McDurfee, Seibert will need to step up next year to fill those places in the lineup.

The female athlete of the week was also found on the basketball court. Redshirt freshman Mashira Newman averaged 14.6 points in her three games this week, helping the lady Marauders continue their stellar season.

On Monday, Newman scored 15 points for the Marauders in their 68-41 win over the lady Raiders of Shippensburg. Entering the game the Marauders were ranked number 25 in division two. The win over Shippensburg was the fifth straight win for the nationally ranked Marauders.

Newman continued to shine on the court scoring 21 points against Cheyney, and led the team in scoring as the Marauders soared over Cheyney 75-64. Newman was a key figure in the team continuing their current winning streak and their run for national recognition.

She also added eight points in the team’s game against Bloomsburg. The Marauders dominated Bloomsburg 56-47. The win over Bloomsburg clinched the PSAC East division title for the Marauders.

Currently, the lady Marauders are ranked number 23 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll for women’s division II basketball. The women’s basketball team has reached the NCAA tournament the previous two seasons, and is looking to make their third consecutive trip.

With only one remaining home game in the regular season, the team needs all the support they can get, and need the fans, to be there as they finished with one the best records in Millersville women’s basketball history.

Over the past week, the Millersville women’s basketball team has played two games. On Feb. 3, the team entered Pucillo gymnasium to face off against the East Stroudsburg University Warriors.

The game started off strong. Coming off a rebound by Jenna Craig, Raquel Green put up Millersville’s first two points. Millersville’s man-on-man defense strategy kept ESU off the scoreboard until the 16 minute mark, when ESU’s senior forward DeAnna Rayam sank two baskets after being fouled by Green. Around six minutes in, ESU managed a three-pointer. Gabrielle Styles was quick to answer and swiftly came up with four points for the Lady Marauders. Following an eight point run by Mashira Newman, Ashley Moyer, and Dominique Strohman, a visibly frustrated ESU began to call for defense.

After two missed three-pointers, ESU finally managed to add three. Millersville still led 17-10. From there, Green increased Millersville’s lead by five points. Styles and Moyer both added a point to the total. With just under three minutes left in play, ESU rallied to add eight to their total. With 1:17 left, lead scorer Green left the court limping. In her absence, ESU decreased their deficit by five points.

The score was Millersville 26 – ESU 22 at the end of the first half.

In the beginning of the second half, ESU quickly took the opportunity to continue their scoring run, making it within one point of Millersville’s lead. However, a three-pointer from Moyer turned the tables. Craig put up four points. Green followed her lead also adding four, and seemed confident on her ankle. After the game, Craig said of Green “She’s in. She’ll be fine.”

ESU called a team time-out with 13 minutes left in play, but the pause didn’t seem to help the troubled Warriors. ESU continued to fail at turning possessions into baskets, and numerous shots fell short.

Three minutes later, ESU finally scored with a layup by Mia Waringm. ESU continued their perennial call for defense with good reason as they drifted 10 points behind Millersville. Twenty seconds later, Craig scored two for the Lady Marauder’s with an assist from Newman. The score was 46-32.

Three minutes into the second half, a foul by Ashley Moyer provided a hint of what would come. At the end of the second, play got rough and members from both teams were sent crashing to the floor.

Both teams racked up numerous fouls, most occurring during the end of the game. The two teams racked up an astounding 31 fouls in the second half. Becky Hayter of ESU fouled at the 3:56 mark. Her team members Detzi and Mel Villano fouled as well.

Craig was the first to foul on the Millersville team with less than two minutes left in play. Green earned her third foul with 11 seconds remaining.

Newman was fouled twice with less than 40 seconds left. ESU’s Hayter and Barb Borst were responsible for Newman’s added four points which put Millersville ahead of ESU by nine points. Overall, Green scored an impressive 19 points. Newman and Moyer both totaled 11, and Craig earned seven points.

Green scored the final basket for the Lady Marauders. The women won the game 55-46. However, the team was not impressed with their play. “Feels like we lost,” Craig said, “The chemistry wasn’t there tonight like it has been the past six games.” Despite this, freshman Newman came up big.

As predicted, Newman swept past Safiyyah Bashir’s record for steals by a freshman. Newman earned three in the game, putting her total at 73. Bashir’s record of 71 steals had been untouched for 12 years.

After the game, they were scheduled to play West Chester University’s Golden Rams on Saturday, but the Marauders got an unexpected day off when the major snowstorm Friday night postponed their Saturday meet-up with West Chester University to Sunday afternoon.

As the game began, Craig immediately got to work. It only took the senior forward 10 seconds to put up two points for the Marauders. She went on to score 12 points for her team in the first half. Craig, had a total of 11 for the game. She was also the game’s lead scorer.

In comparison, Green started off slow. She managed only four points in the first half, two of those stemming from a foul.

With help from Moyer, Newman, Sophia Waters, and Aurielle Mosely the Lady Marauders extended their lead over the Golden Rams. Moyer’s three-pointer at the 1:45 mark topped out Millersville’s lead at 18 points.

Despite West Chester adding five late points, by the end of the first half Millersville led by an impressive 13 points, with a score of 31-18.

Renata Neal of West Chester was the first to the basket in the second. Two good foul shots by Dominique Strohman six minutes into the game brought the Marauders their widest lead of the second half: 14 points.

On Feb. 13, Millersville will face Kutztown at 1 p.m. Currently, the Lady Marauders are 17-4 overall. The team will enter their next game on a three game winning streak.

This season, the Millersville women’s basketball team has been on fire. The Lady Marauders are ranked a No. 24 in their division. The team is 5-1 in conference games, and 15-4 overall.

The Marauders have worked hard to get where they are this season. They currently hold top spot in the PSAC Eastern Division rankings. “We put our own pressure on ourselves everyday at practice,” said coach Mary Fleig. Their hard work has been paying off.

Yet, Jan. 27, they suffered a frustrating loss. They met the Cheyney Wolves without the home-court advantage, but with a better record.

The Lady Marauders entered the game with a seven-game winning streak, while their opponent was 2-2 for the season.

The Marauders could only manage 17 points in the first half, and were forced to watch as the Wolves pulled ahead by 17 points.

After halftime, the Marauders came back on to the court determined to make up for the dismal first half. An awesome effort in the game’s final 20 minutes brought the team 41 points, but it was not enough. The women’s undefeated title was denied by the 67-58 loss to Cheyney University.

The loss was Millersville’s first to Cheyney in 38 straight games. Cheyney was the first team to score 57 or more points off the Marauders since Indiana University of Pennsylvania managed the feat on Jan. 3, where they came up with 67 points. However, the Marauders refuse to let the game negatively impact their season. “We learned so much playing on the road at Cheyney. That loss has inspired us for the rest of the entire season,” Fleig said.

Despite losing, three Marauders had big days. Mashira Newman, Raquel Green, and Aiesha Bellamy all racked up points in the double digits. Newman came up with 16 points, Green took 14, and Bellamy managed 10.

There was no time to dwell on the loss, however, as the team was scheduled to face Mansfield University on Jan. 30.

The Millersville women were eager to display their prowess on the court, and with the lead scoring defense in the league, the Marauders made quick work of the Mansfield Mountaineers.

The Lady Marauders, again without the home-court advantage, were driven to win. The team started off strong, and kept the game scoreless for about three minutes before Ashley Moyer scored the game’s first basket. In the beginning of the first, the Mountaineers were plagued by turnovers, and the Marauders found it easy to add points.

Leaving the court at the end of the first half, Millersville had proven themselves more than worthy of their ranking, leaving the Mountaineers to try and make up for a 23-point deficit. The score was 42-19. Green accounted for 14 of the team’s 42 points.

In the second half, Green, Jenna Craig, and Newman helped add to the Marauders total. The Mountaineers came back out on court with a good scoring offense, but could not touch the Lady Marauder’s lead. The team beat Mansfield 59-40.

Newman, a freshman, has been having an incredible season. She currently leads the division in steals along with Brooque Williams of IUP, a senior. Out of Millersville’s total of 16 steals, Newman was responsible for four. She now has a season total of 70, bringing her within one steal of Safiyyah Bashir’s record which has been untouched since 1998.

Even with the earlier loss to Cheyney, the team remains ahead in the rankings. They are currently first in the PSAC Eastern Division overall. Their closest competitor, Kutztown University, is 4-2 in conference games this season. When the two teams met earlier this season, Millersville defeated Kutztown 61-42.

The men’s basketball team’s latest loss to Mansfield Saturday, was a game that the team needed to win in order to help keep their playoff hopes alive. However, the Mansfield Mountaineers were too much for the Marauders as they fell 67-64. This is the first time Millersville has lost to Mansfield three straight times since the 1983-84 season.

The Marauders kept the game modest, and never trailed by more than nine points. The first half saw many fouls for both teams, with the Marauders committing six within the first 10 minuets of play.

Despite the fouls, the team kept the game close even going ahead by six points on a three point shot by sophomore Mike Seibert with an assist by senior Palmer McDurfee with 9:15 left to play in the fist half. Millersville then saw their lead vanish as Mansfield not only closed the gap, but also went ahead on a three point shot at the buzzer by Chris Pender to end the first half.

The Mountaineers entered the second half with momentum that Millersville struggled to overcome. Mansfield extended their lead to 45-37 within the first five minuets of play. The game continued to go in favor of the home court Mountaineers as they pulled ahead for the biggest lead of the game with a score of 62-53 with only 3:22 left to play.

However, the Marauders forged ahead and held the Mountaineers scoreless for the next thee minutes as they closed the gap to 62-59. Scoring by senior Jason Blake and Seibert and sophomore Rob Wyley kept Millersville in the game until the end.

With only seconds remaining the Marauders were forced to foul the Mountaineers, but clutch free throw shooting by Mansfield’s Ryan Callahan put the game out of reach.

Saturday’s game followed a similar pattern the team has faced this season. In the last seven games the Marauders lost four games by less than eight points in each contest.

The team still has high hopes though. “I think we need to limit our mistakes and keep playing hard and playing defense,” Blake said.

This is the second straight loss for the Marauders and their fourth in the last five games. The team is now 7-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Marauders are now tied for third place in the PSAC East division along with West Chester and Bloomsburg.

The team will have to make a strong finish to the season in order to overcome these losses if they want to make the playoffs. “Motivation must come from one another, we’re a family and we will continue to support and push one another and learn from our mistakes so we can be successful,” McDurfee said.

Manfield’s Yuseff Carr led the game with 18 points. Millersville’s Seibert led the team with 14 points.

Senior Alen Ahmetovic had a solid outing scoring nine points, nine rebounds, and a career high six assists. Blake also added 11 points in Saturday’s game.

The remainder of the Marauders schedule will be a challenge and the team will have to play in top form to overcome the recent losses. “I think our toughest challenge will be just to stay focused on the task ahead and limit our mistakes,” Blake said.

Millersville is gearing up for another thrilling basketball season by bringing back Marauder Midnight Madness, and everyone is invited.

On Tuesday October 14, the Millersville athletic department will throw a pep rally in Pucillo Gymnasium for the official beginning of both the men’s and women’s basketball seasons.

Doors will open at 10:30 p.m. and spectators are encouraged to arrive early, as the first 50 spectators will receive a free Marauder Midnight Madness t-shirt.

Everyone that enters will also receive a ticket. The tickets will be used towards drawings for activities such as a relay race.

Prizes will be handed out for these contests. Marauder Midnight Madness t-shirts will also be on sale for $10.

Graduate Assistant Gretchen Imes said the aim of this event is to cheer on the basketball teams and get everyone ready for the new season.

“The goal is for the university to show their support for the upcoming basketball season by gathering students, faculty, staff and the community,” Imes said.

The event will be similar to last year’s Marauder Midnight Madness.
WGAL’s Pat Principe will emcee again this year. DJ Cool La will be playing music throughout the night.

“He did a great job last year,” Imes said.

The Millersville band will provide the music at midnight when, as might be expected, the basketball teams will the court.

The teams will compete in various contests such a 3-point and slam dunk competition.

The men’s and women’s teams will compete against each other in various events.

Over 600 people showed up last year, and Millersville hopes even more people will attend this year and show their school spirit.
