The Millersville University Marauders had another upsetting week after being shutout by the Bloomsburg Huskies on Saturday. MU traveled to Bloomsburg on a rainy Saturday and came ready to play a team which held the Division II NCAA title for the past three years.

Throughout the first half, the Marauder defense held strong. BU had five shots on goal compared to MU’s three. Goalie Sara Dickinson was the answer to four of those five shots, as she made sure nothing came past the goal line. The game went into halftime scoreless, and it was still anyone’s game.

Coming into the second half, both teams knew they would have to fight harder. Becoming more aggressive, the Huskies winded up a shot into the cage 10 minutes into the second half. This was not the end for Bloomsburg as they found an open hole on two occasions, connecting two more shots into the goal for their 3-0 shutout victory over Millersville.

The Marauders were awarded seven penalty corners throughout the game but weren’t able to get a successful shot on goal. Millersville University will not be defeated. Since they have faced the best teams of their 2009 schedule, they will know what to prepare for as they continue.

This will be a big weekend for the Marauders as they face Seton Hill Saturday at home and Mansfield on Sunday away. This will be the second time MU will face both of these teams this season.

Earlier this season MU dominated Seton Hill away 5-1 and Mansfield home 2-1, and has another chance at victory this weekend.

Come out to watch the Marauders as they roll over Seton Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Chryst Field.

While I am grateful that you used ‘The Snapper” to voice your concern about these supposed forms of “segregation,” there are a number of points to be made regarding your thoughts on the subject.

While you claim that we would like to “wish” segregation and racism no longer exist, the sad truth is it does. Walking around this campus and any community with this ideology only further promotes racism and ignores the issues at hand. Race is a social construct, not biological, and has been solely created by human beings as a form of identification and separation. It later causes slavery, segregation, and discrimination. The actions of civil rights activists have brought us closer to erasing the indistinct “color line,” but these actions and voices will not eradicate the years of race history that have accumulated in this country and many others. Student groups such as the BSU and the long-standing NAACP are other successful components which have allowed minority groups to prosper and establish their position in a community, with as much right to do so as any other interest group.

Your detailed observations of the Organizational Outbreak reveal a judgmental intellect and a lack of interest in dispelling this “segregation” and “racism” you have contended still exists in our community. The statements you have made about feeling as though you would be making a “mockery” of these groups are not backed by efforts to see if they would be true.

What stopped you from walking up to the BSU or NAACP and getting the story on their membership regulations? How can you expect that these groups will express care for your concerns unless you take action regarding what you believe they are doing “wrong?” Why not break the “unwritten rule” and apply for membership to one of these groups?

You also stated that you do not understand why these clubs exist. This goes back to your comment about us wishing that racism no longer exist.

It does.

Organizations like The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People are making an effort to advance the rights, liberties, and abilities of the groups that have been oppressed in our embarrassing history of race relations. Why, in 2009, do we need to have organizations devoted to a certain culture? Because we can.

For years, if not centuries, white American men have oppressed minority groups and cultures in this country, leaving them powerless and voiceless with little chance of re-gaining what they have lost. We have groups to celebrate a specific culture’s existence and acknowledge what they have contributed to the melting pot that is our country. What is your culture? Wouldn’t you like to celebrate it?

This falls in with my final point about your remarks about creating a White Student Union. While I was not able to immediately access campus statistics, whites no doubt represent more than half of our student body. The presence of white students on campus is visually obvious, and I guarantee there is at least one student organization whose members only include white students. (Just looking at the pictures in “The Snapper,” this seems to be the case.) They do not suffer from oppression, nor have their ancestors or older relatives experienced discrimination that has historically denied them equal access to resources. We do not need a white student union because a majority of students are white. The purpose of groups like the BSU, the NAACP, the Asian and Friends Affiliation, and the Society on Latino Affairs is to allow students of these and other ethnicities to come together and celebrate what their culture represents to them and to discuss their current and future existence.

Have I even attended meetings for these groups or attempted to join them? No, and perhaps we should both make greater attempts to do so, because I am certain that any display of interest in another culture would be welcomed with open arms.

Finally, I would suggest that you take Dr. Carrie Smith’s sociology course on Race and Ethnicity before you graduate. The knowledge you will obtain from the course is eye-opening, beneficial, and will allow you to develop an intelligent understanding of race and ethnic relations.

There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” On October 7, 2009, the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” program is calling all men and women to “get their swagger on and strut in stilettos” to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence. This program asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes throughout Millersville University to protest.

It is not easy walking in these shoes, but it is a fun way to get the community to talk about something really difficult to discuss: gender relations and sexual violence.

Frank Baird first proposed “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence” in 2001. Donna Cargas, who is part of the Millersville University Police Department, was the one who thought to bring the idea to campus.

The program provides several opportunities to get people talking as well as helping men better understand and appreciate women’s experiences. The walk hopes to change perspectives as well as improving gender relationships and decreasing the potential for violence.

Sexualized violence does not only affect women; it affects the men who care about either them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, or other communities. Every two minutes someone in America is raped and one in six American women are victims of sexual assault. That means someone you care about, someone you know, has been or may become the victim of sexual violence.

The walk is being organized by the Elsie S. Shenk Wellness and Women’s Program and the Millersville University Police Department, where a portion of the proceeds from sponsored walkers will benefit Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County. They are also collecting items for the women and children in the local domestic violence shelter. Drop-off boxes can be found in all resident halls, the Montour House, and the Lebanon House.

The opening ceremonies and on-site registration are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on October 7th outside of the Student memorial Center by the bookstore entrance with the walk beginning at 6 p.m. Walk on registrants are welcomed to join. Men are encouraged (but not required) to walk in women’s shoes as well as to bring their own high heels because there will be a limited number available at the event for those who do not have their own shoes. Participants are being asked to obtain a minimum of $10 in sponsorships.

We can know the truth because the truth is everywhere. It is a like a lamp around us, constantly hovering. We may miss it due to distractions in our lives. If we decide not to accept the truth, that only lessens of amount the people who know the truth. The truth does not respect of person, but loves all people. The truth desires intimacy with all men and women but will not infringe on people’s boundaries. We must know that truth is out there, though we may not have to accept it.

Truth is not influenced by man’s wisdom, and can last longer than the greatest empire in the world. Truth is forever, but empires only wither. If I take a glass ceiling and shatter it, the truth will still last. If I attempt to shatter the truth, then the truth was a lie. Truth is unbreakable and is not humanely achievable, but only God-achievable. We may know the truth because the truth is from God.

I may leave the truth or deny it, but the truth will never leave me or deny me. The truth is a lover of my soul that I do not want to let go. The truth loves me, loves you, and is jealous of your time. The truth cries everyday because you smack it in the face, because it already paid the price at calvary.

The pain you feel can be taken away. The tears can be wiped away. Joy is fluent in the person’s heart and the truth is in them.

“You may pass me by but I will not pass you by,” says the truth.

“You may spit at my face, but I will only pursue you even more,” says the truth.

“For those who believe in nothing, I believe in you,” says the truth.

“I know you exist though it may be otherwise for you, my beloved,” says the truth.

If you are in bondage; the truth will set you free. If you are in danger; you will be rescued. If you are trapped; you will be released. If you are alone; the truth was there the whole time in your darkest hours. “If you simply live life denying the truth, I never denied you,” says the truth.

The truth speaks of getting what you desire. If you ask for bread, will it ever give you stone? No. You will receive bread plus more. If you ask for fish, will ever receive a serpent? No. The truth will give you a basket of fish. The truth desires to bless, love and protect not kill and destroy.

The Millersville women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to Slippery Rock, marking the fifth time in six games the Marauders have been held without a single goal. The last goal from the team came nearly two weeks ago, when the Marauders defeated Shippensburg at home 1-0 on September 19. The most recent loss to Slippery Rock dropped Millersville’s record to 2-8 at the halfway point of the season.

Millersville hosted Slippery Rock on Saturday, and failed to get a shot on goal in the first half of play. Still, the Marauders were not out of the game. Millersville did not allow a goal in the first half either. However, things did not improve in the second half as the Marauders could only muster one shot on goal following the break, while Slippery Rock netted three in the final 45 minutes.

Millersville has managed just two goals in their last seven games, while opponents have found the back of the net 19 times in that span. For the season, the Marauders have scored a paltry 10 goals through 10 games , which is hardly enough to keep the team in games. Especially when they have yielded 26 goals in that time.

“We have people that can score,” senior Sarah Cameron said. “We’re not even looking to shoot it though. We have to have more of a scoring mentality, it’s always been pass first. We need someone to step up and start taking shots and hopefully the rest of the team will follow in that path.”

The Marauders entered the year looking for their first winning season since 2004 when they went 10-6-1. If things do not turn around soon, it does not seem as though the Marauders will be able to put an end to their sub-.500 streak. However, it is hard to say that any college team with a roster as young as the Marauders would fair any better thus far in the season.

The Millersville roster features 19 players who are in their freshman or sophomore years out of the total 26 members on the roster. Growing pains are to be expected. The underclassmen are getting their fair share of college level experience that will no doubt benefit the team this year. Of the 26 members, 24 will be returning for next season.

However, that still is a year away, and hope is not lost on this year’s squad. The team is halfway through its conference schedule and faces each opponent in the PSAC East a second time. Millersville hopes to fair better against the conference opponents as they went 1-5 against them in the beginning half of the season, with their lone win coming against Shippensburg.

“Our freshmen go to see every team once, so the jitters shouldn’t be there anymore,” Cameron said. “We just have to calm down and play our game. I don’t think these teams are three goals better than us.”

As the season continues to approach the end, the light at the end of the tunnel for the Marauders seems to keep getting dimmer. Still, it is only the halfway point, and the Marauders could really begin to show improvement over the next few weeks.

“We just have to go out and keep playing hard every game no matter what the score was before. It’s time for us to start putting two halves together,” Cameron said.

“Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror," is the quote printed on the meeting agenda for last Thursday’s meeting of Millersville University’s Student Senate. The quote, said by Byrd Bagget, is exactly what every member of Student Senate does.

“Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror,” is the quote printed on the meeting agenda for last Thursday’s meeting of Millersville University’s Student Senate. The quote, said by Byrd Bagget, is exactly what every member of Student Senate does.

President Mackenzie Wrobel, Vice President Dan Aiello, Treasurer Joe Muller, Recording Secretary Kaila Repman, Corresponding Secretary Sarah Darling and Parliamentarian Donnie Aulenbach, as well as every student senator, and the faculty advisors work incredibly hard to cater to every one of Millersville’s student body’s needs.

Student Senate handles almost every concern or problem relating to something on campus. In order to be a senator, you must keep office hours, polling hours, and hold membership on at least two committees. Student Senate has committees for pretty much everything, including dining, housing, student concerns, and much more. There are currently nine open seats for on campus students; fourteen open seats for commuting students, and two open seats for graduate students. At the meeting on Thursday, five new freshmen representatives were sworn in as new senators, as well as one commuting student that was re-sworn in.

An important point of information addressed at the Student Senate meeting was that there is still a Student Trustee position open. Student Trustees do not have to be senators, but must have completed at least two semesters; one at Millersville, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and at least 12 credits. Student Trustees work toward promoting the University and its welfare.

Other business covered included work toward producing a Student Senate newsletter, which would be physically available to students and organizations informing every one of what is going on with Student Senate on campus. Student Senate also voted to open a Survey Monkey account online in order to keep in touch with student body concerns by having survey questions and spaces for students to place their own comments and concerns relating to issues. The vote also passed to allocate $349.65 to the MU Cycling Club, in order for their president, a very prestigious cyclist, to attend the Trexlertown Nationals.

Keep your eye out on campus for the Student Senate at events such as the Wellness Fair, Campus Conquest, and the Cultural Showcase, where they will be Switzerland. Remember the Student Trustee position is open if you are interested. Student Senate meetings are held every Thursday at 6:30 in SMC Room 161. Applications for Student Trustees are due October 16th and can be picked up in the Senate Office or the Information desk in the SMC. For more information one can visit www.millersville.edu/studentaffairs/.

Things are beginning to look like 2008 for Millersville football team, and that’s not a good thing. Millersville’s defense crumbled again on Saturday as the Shippensburg Red Raiders took it to the Marauders during the first night game in Millersville since 2007.

Shippensburg amassed 566 total yards of offense against the Marauders’ porous defense as the Red Raiders came away on top with a final score of 63-24. This marks the second week in a row Millersville has yielded 63 points in a game. Last weekend, the Marauders fell to West Chester by a score of 63-10.

While the offense did not do too much to help the defense last weekend against West Chester, they did what they could by tallying 24 points this week against the Red Raiders. Senior running back Brad Lantz carried the load on the gound for a season-high of 107 yards. The offense kept the game close midway through the same quarter as a run by sophomore receiver Matt Egenrieder ran the ball in from 11 yards out to pull the team within four points at 21-17 with just over seven and a half minutes remaining in the half.

It would not be enough, however, as Shippensburg would score 35 unanswered points before Millersville scored their final touchdown on the day. Senior quarterback Bill Shirk threw for 130 yards and found receiver Jamal Smith in the endzone twice on the day to go with his one interception thrown. It was not a very good day for the special teams as well, as they had two field goals blocked and one missed as.

Shippensburg had no problem moving the ball up and down the field on they day as they gained 354 yards on the ground, and another 212 through the air on 15-of-19 passing. The Red Raiders averaged an impressive 7.9 yards per carry.

Things started off well for the Marauders this season, in which they were hoping to bury memories of last season’s 1-10 finish in head coach Greg Colby’s inaugural year. After opening the season with a win against Assumption College, Millersville dropped two games against tough opponents that they very well could have won but just could not put everything together at the right time. Although they came away with those losses to Slippery Rock and IUP, the Marauders took away positives from each game, especially the IUP game because they lost only 17-3 compared to a 63-3 defeat in 2008.

However, the Marauder’s defense over the last week has played like the defense from last year. Things do not seem to be getting brighter for Millersville as they prepare to play against fourth ranked Bloomsburg this week. Bloomsburg is 5-0 and is just coming off a 28-14 victory of C.W. Post. The Huskies have taken the last nine meetings against the teams and look to extend that streak this weekend.

If the Marauders hope to turn things around this weekend, they will have to hope to get off to a hot start. The Marauders have opened games sluggishly this season, as they have been outscored 42-3 in the first quarter at this point during the season.

Bloomsburg does not feature a great offense but they have a very stout defense their offense. This match-up could present the potential for an upset this week, with Millersville experienced offense they can put points on the board in a hurry.

“It is very important to try and score first, in case we get put into a perdicament where the other team keeps putting points up on our defense,” junior running back Akeem Johnson said. “Just like I believed the last few weeks, that if we can keep our heads up and play hard we can come out with an upset.”

The Marauders, however, feel like they are right there in terms of stringing together a few more wins this season.

“We have it on both sides of the ball,” Johnson said. “It’s just a matter of bringing everything together. We just have to go as hard as we do when we first start the game.” That will be vital against a disciplined Huskies team.

“We play with a lot of togetherness. We’re still young but overall we work good together and we’re intense,” Johnson said. “We just have to bring the fun back into the game.”

The fun starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Bloomsburg University.

As I flip through the TV guide on my satellite, I often see “reality shows” that are becoming more prevalent as networks begin to scrape the bottom of the barrel for ideas. The reality show I am talking about is the type based on the dimwitted lives of rich people’s kids or wives.

The spoiled brats and wives of the super rich get their own television shows, not because of talent or interesting lives, but because they are spoiled. Since when has the idea of watching a show about rich people complaining about their “difficult” lives become interesting? Apparently, I missed the boat when it came to what qualifies as good TV

If there is one show that incorporates all of the ingredients of a stupid rich girl show, it is “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Since the daughters all seem to possess the intelligence of a thumb tack, it does not seem like an interesting premise for a television show.

However, the sad thing is not the infantile minds of the Kardashian sisters, but rather the fact that the show is going into its fourth season! Why would anyone in their sane mind find spoiled and unintelligent rich girls entertaining? Better yet, what is so special about these girls that they have their own TV show? Perhaps being rich, spoiled, and not knowing how to tie your shoes all factor into the equation.

On the same level as the Kardashian brain trust is the series of “The Real Housewives of (fill in the blank).” Again, besides being the self-centered moochers of their rich husbands, what makes these housewives so interesting? The housewives have terribly hectic and difficult lives, because I am sure the four hours of shopping at the mall followed by pedicures and lattes is an extremely demanding day. So it would appear that being rich, simple, and spoiled makes anyone worth watching on TV.

It seems trash TV is taking over entertainment in our country. The qualifications for being on a reality show have dropped to, well, nothing. No talent, unique skills, or even difficult struggles are needed to become a star. Just be rich, talentless, and sexy and you can sign your reality show contract tomorrow.

Why am I writing this article? Is it to satirize the stupidity of modern reality TV, to mock the spoiled elite of the country, or to beg the watchers of these TV shows to realize just how low-brow these shows really are? Let’s go with “all of the above” as the answer to this question.

College is more than just education, books, and studying into the early morning. College is also a time to experience new relationships. Whether the relationship is flowing smoothly or trekking along a rocky road, here is some helpful advice for all those current and potential couples roaming Millersville’s campus.

On September 22nd, 2009, the Last Lecture Series sponsored by United Campus Ministry and Christians Open Minded presented Dr. David Hill, a professor of psychology and a licensed psychologist. In the packed Stayer Hall multi-purpose room, Hill discussed his lecture titled, “Happiness, Misery, and Relationships” to his audience.

“My father used to say to me and my siblings, ‘You’ve got to take the bitter with the sweet,’” Hill said. It is a quote actually taken from a song by Billy Eckstine dating back to his father’s adolescent and early adult years. “My father said to my mother, luckily I was sitting there, ‘You are the best thing that ever happened to me, Lucille,’” Hill said. He thought back to his years back home, when his late father used to fill the household with memories that would last a lifetime. It is one of the contributions that have played a significant role in the aspects of his life. That night, his message to everyone is everything contributes to your life; your happiness and misery. The key finding prevalent in the research of what contributes to happiness and unhappiness is relationships. In regards to significant people, one’s happiness and misery is influenced by relationships with parents, siblings, friends, mentors, God, or some higher power.

Relationships can extend to one’s hobbies or interests through a concept known as “flow.” This is when happiness can be felt through a sense of timelessness, such as horseback riding, where the enjoyment and happiness makes time flow by quickly. “Flow” can even be experienced through intellectual means: a professor teaching his class or a student giving an oral report. “Flow” causes the person to become “focused on the activity or challenge at that moment, similar to a meditative state,” Hill said.

Similar to “flow” is mindfulness, another concept conducted on subjects who were suffering from borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy, bipolar disorder, or substance abuse. The objective was to controlling their emotions and avoiding suicide, decreasing when it became too high or increasing when it became too low. Another similar method is through “runner’s high,” a chemical reaction with endorphins.

Dr. Janet Kiecolt-Glaser, along with other researchers like John Gottman, studied that transactions within the context of relationships derive in part from brain structures and brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, exerting a powerful effect on immune systems. They can implant on the vegas nerve an electronic pulse in the subject’s brain, deeper if desired, that can stimulate certain areas and help elicit a certain response.

One of the reasons for bad relationships lies in the immune system’s functioning in the context of relationships. The immune system is more vulnerable to diseases when couples criticize each other rather than sticking to the facts of an argument. The question then becomes whether or not one should actually marry. About 95 percent do marry at least once; it would increase if gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender marriages were legal.

Sue Johnson, ED.D, focused on the question and built upon the attachment theory. According to Sue Johnson, “Love is an attachment bond.” From love brings about great suffering and pain, yet happiness and pleasure. Other researchers, such as Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver have also conducted research along these lines.

John Gottman, his wife, and their colleagues at the University of Washington have studied marriages of long duration rather than marriages near the end to discover what composes marital longevity. From their research, they have identified four myths: the first myth is that avoiding conflict will ruin the marriage. As the adage goes, “Never go to bed angry.” The second myth is that affairs are the main cause of divorce. Dr. Hill says, “An affair marks a severe danger in marriage.” The third myth is that men are not biologically made for marriage, despite the fact married men live longer than married women. The fourth and last myth is that men and women are from different planets, based on John Grey’s book, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.”

Furthermore, Gottman and his colleagues have provided a “recipe for relationships.” The first ingredient is to establish “love maps.” According to Dr. Hill, “love maps” are, in essence, getting to know your partner very well. Simply put, one has to be attune, or emotionally dialed in, listening and remembering every aspect of their partner. The second ingredient is nurturing fondness and admiration. Both partners should be fond of the other’s traits, abilities, and accomplishments, admiring them as good things. The third ingredient is a saying that goes, “When the going gets tough, they turn toward each other instead of away from each other.” Instead of the man turning to bars, drugs, or violence and the woman turning to her girlfriends, they turn to each other. This process is called triangulation, a method used in mathematics as well. The fourth ingredient is letting your partner influence you. Do what your partner tells you to do. The fifth ingredient is solving the solvable conflicts. Out of all the conflicts a relationship endures, one-third (33 percent) is solvable while two-thirds (67 percent) are unresolvable, also known as perpetual. It is commonly seen in strong well-functioning relationships. The sixth and last ingredient is finding ways to talk about sex that is comfortable to both partners.

Finally, Dr. Hill concluded his lecture with the results Gottman and his colleagues have identified as the “Four Horsemen of the Marital Apocalypse,” or what makes relationships miserable, ultimately ending them. The first horseman is criticism, attacking the spouse personally about their work and the like. The second horseman is contempt, becoming aloof from the spouse and demanding superiority. The third horseman is defensiveness, which prevents the spouse from having a word in matters or allowing them a voice of opinion. The fourth and last horseman is stonewalling, as the name states, building an invisible, and metaphorical stone wall between each other that keeps situations unsettled.

I wanted to write and address the article written in “The Snapper” Thursday September 24, 2009. The article, “Segregation at MU,” addressed what the author believed to be racism at Millersville University. She stated that the Millersville University, “…NAACP and BSU from what I could see, had only African American students in their club.”

Although this seems true on the surface, I suggest we all understand our own statements before making them. The titles “BSU” and “NAACP” are titles given to the organizations because they either represent a national organization or are chapters representing students throughout the United States. Based on my own three year experience at Millersville, BSU and NAACP have never told anybody students of other races could not join.

The statement made by the author that these organizations “…cause racism by not allowing other races to join,” is not only inaccurate, but based on ignorance. NAACP reached out to College Republicans in Fall 2009 when they asked representatives of our club to join them for a meeting to discuss politics. At first, I will admit that I was nervous about how the organization would take my political views considering many members campaigned for President Barack Obama. After stating my views, I was applauded and thanked for accepting the invite. Although we never reached a consensus and I am sure few were swayed to vote for John McCain, I was treated with respect and asked to come back for regular meetings.

The arm is always extended, but people are often so wrapped up in the title they never realize the organizations’ open acceptance of all students. Editorials that imply “Hip Hop Culture” are the catalyst to violence are the reason that racism still exists.
