Last weekend, the university track team welcomed other area competitors to their 2010 spring opener.
The home turf seemed to have a positive impact on the team. In only their third outdoor meet, numerous athletes performed admirably, and 14 team members had top five finishes.
With the baseball season now under way, the Phillies are gearing up to make their third straight run for the World Series. Last season’s loss to the New York Yankees is still fresh in every fan’s mind.
Throughout the off-season. the Phillies have made a number of key line-up changes in hopes of making Philadelphia the city of champions once again. The key addition was the pick up of ace pitcher Roy Halladay in a four team trade that sent Cliff Lee to Seattle.
Over the weekend, the baseball team took on Shippensburg for some key conference games. The Marauders were able to pull away with a four-game sweep of the Raiders, improving their overall record to 14-15 and a conference record of 8-6. The winning streak was enough to move Millersville into third place in the PSAC East standings.
On Wednesday, March 31 the Lady Marauders stepped into Kutztown Bear territory. This matchup was a turnaround for the Marauders. They came out on top with a win of 11-10.
This was the only game that Millersville played on natural grass. “We had difficulty making the adjustment to the grass surface but were able to come out with a victory,” head coach Barbara Waltman said.
Athlete of the Week – Adam Boyd
How long have you been playing your sport?
“I’ve been playing since I was three years old.”
How did you become involved with baseball?
“I started playing sports in general with my dad. Growing up I played a lot of sports, but baseball was my favorite.”
Since their big win over Shippensburg, the women’s softball team has been preparing for a tough upcoming schedule. On March 31, the Millersville softball team traveled to No. 22 West Chester University for the first of the week’s two doubleheaders.
Game one of the day was a slow start. The first inning came and went without a single run and only three hits. The second inning saw some action with Millersville’s Jamie Motsko homering early in the start. West Chester did not respond to the run until bottom of the sixth, when the Rams finally managed to bring two runners across home plate.
The Millersville synchronized swimming team, formally known as the Dolphin Club, is celebrating their 60th anniversary, and has set the record for the oldest club at the University.
Although the club is coed, it currently consists of seven female members and meets twice a week. Since no prior experience is necessary to join, the club takes new members in the fall and spends the first half of the semester teaching the fundamentals to beginners.
This year’s NFL draft will be shown in primetime with the first round on Thursday night and the second and third round on Friday evening. The spotlights are brighter than ever before and undoubtedly they will shine brightest on the quarterbacks.
Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen are going to go through a month of intense scrutiny leading up to April 22. There is a never-ending search for the coveted franchise quarterback. Bradford and Clausen are seen as the elite quarterbacks in an otherwise weak year for the position, thus helping their stock immensely. Since 2000, 26 quarterbacks have gone in the first round of the draft, 16 of which went in the first half of the first round. Interestingly enough, 13 of the 26 are not full time starters; this shows what a crap-shoot the NFL draft can be.
Dr. Thomas Fink, a creative poet and performer from the City University of New York, LaGuardia held a poetry reading March 31. Dr. Fink recited several of his latest verse and abstract poetry in four different modes: Long and short poetry, a poetic/dramatic play, and series poetry. Dr. Fink’s works of poetry include “Clarity and Other Poems,” “No Appointment Necessary,” “After Taxes,” “Gossip: A Book of Poems,” and “Surprise Visit.”
For those who are unfamiliar with the group, She & Him could be more aptly named “She & (brief supplementary cameos from) Him.” Or maybe “She Sings About Him.” Of course, those do not sound nearly as good.
The band, featuring actress turned singer Zooey Deschanel, perhaps best known for her role in “500 Days of Summer,” and producer, singer, and guitarist Matthew Ward (better known by his stage name, M. Ward), formed in early 2007 after the pair met on the set of “The Go-Getter,” in which Deschanel had a starring role. After being asked to perform a duet for the end credits, the two found they shared musical interests and inspirations. On a whim, Deschanel sent Ward years of demos she had recorded, and the two began a musical collaboration.
