On Monday night the men’s basketball team broke their five game losing streak by defeating the Shippensburg Red Raiders’ 79-71 at home in Pucillo Gymnasium.

The game was dominated by three-point shooting from both teams. In the first half Shippensburg got out to an early lead, but Millersville was able to hold off the Raiders offense.

There were five lead changes in the first half alone, but key three point shooting from freshman Jim Kelleher gave Millersville a 29-26 lead with 3:52 left in the half. Shippensburg made a comeback hitting another shot beyond the arc with about a minute left in the first half, bringing the score to 33-32 giving Millersville the lead at halftime.

The Marauders entered the second half with plenty of energy and motivation that Ship struggled to stop. In previous weeks the Marauders struggled to find success in the second half, but the game Monday night showed a different team.

A key turning point came when sophomore Mike Seibert hit a three-point shot while being fouled. Seibert added a free throw to finish the four point play bringing the score to 48-43 in Millersville’s favor.

The Marauders fed off this turning point to fuel their offensive game going up by 15 points at one point, their biggest lead of the game, with a score of 74-59. However, Ship made the game exciting with a late game comeback.

The Raiders cut the lead to 12 with only 2:12 remaining in the game and holding Millersville scoreless for almost two minutes. Shippensburg brought the game within eight points with 1:32 left to play in the game.

With time running out the Raiders turned to fouling the Marauders, who kept the game out of reach by hitting key free throws, bringing the final score to 79-71.

This is the first win for the Marauders in six games, and the second in the last seven games. With only three games remaining in the season the Marauders still have high hopes. “I’m still optimistic at this point, I still feel like we can make a push at the end of the season and hopefully get in the playoffs,” sophomore guard Nigel Davis said.

Millersville had five players who scored double digits including Seibert who had a career high of 26 points. Seibert also led the charge from beyond the arc hitting seven of 11 shots. Kelleher, seniors Palmer McDurfee and Jason Blake, and sophomore Rob Wyley all joined Seibert in double digit scoring.

Millersville is now tied with West Chester and Shippensburg with a PSAC East divisional record of 3-7. Millersville’s overall record now stands at 8-15. The team will travel to East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg before playing their final home game Feb. 27 against Mansfield.

Only two days after a victory over PSAC rival Kutztown University, the Millersville women’s basketball faced off against Shippensburg Monday night in Pucillo gymnasium.

The Lady Marauders took possession of the game from the beginning. Raquel Green got things started by quickly putting up four points within the game’s opening three minutes. A foul by Isabel Scott of the Shippensburg Raiders on Ashley Moyer only added to the Marauder's score. Moyer’s two points were a warning to the Raider defense. She went on to score 13 points in the first half alone.

A foul by Isabel Scott of the Shippensburg Raiders on Ashley Moyer only added to the Marauder’s score. Moyer’s two points were a warning to the Raider defense. She went on to score 13 points in the first half alone.

Following a rebound by Gabrielle Styles with just under four minutes left in the first half, Mashira Newman put up two points that heralded the beginning of the Lady Marauders’ 14-point streak that finished up the half, including four from Emily Balogh returning from injury.

The score at the end of the first half was heavily weighted in the home team’s favor at 41-19, leaving the Raiders with a 22-point deficit.

The Millersville lead continued throughout the rest of the game. The Marauders kept a tight ship, keeping the Raiders off the board. After four points coming from Green and Dominique Stroman, the Raiders managed come within 18 points of the Lady Marauders.

Fouled by Jenna Craig, Raider Kasey Gardner managed only a single point. Green quickly took the opportunity for a defensive rebound and added two points, followed by Newman and Moyer. By the time Shippensburg earned a basket almost five minutes later, the Millersville team was ahead by 29 points. The overall score was 56-27.

In the remaining 11 minutes, both teams added 13 points. The lowest point for the Raiders came in these final minutes, when a three-pointer by Moyer put Shippensburg down by 31 points. One minute and 17 seconds later, Raider Lindsay Howard’s score decreased the margin by two, only to be reset by Marauder Carrie Sheffey 21 seconds later.

Sheffey’s was the final basket of the game for the Lady Marauders. Shippensburg came up with two baskets in the remaining minute and a half of the game. The final score was 68-41.

Shippensburg was plagued by the Marauder defense. Lady Raider Lauren Beckley leads the PSAC Eastern division in total points, averaging 20 points per game. Against Millersvile, however, she only managed half that.

Moyer anchored the Marauders with the game-high of 19 points, and Newman sank enough baskets to earn 15 points for her team. Green added 12 total points for the Marauders.

Millersville remains leaders of the PSAC Eastern division, with a record of 9-1. Overall, the team is 19-4.

On Feb 17 the Marauders are again at home, facing Cheyney in what promises to be an intense game. In late January, Cheyney University handed Millersville their only loss in what would otherwise be an 11-game winning streak. The loss occurred on Cheyney turf, but on Wednesday the teams will meet again at Pucillo gymnasium. Out of the 11 games played, the women’s basketball team has never lost at home. The game starts at 6 p.m.

Kim Stokes tied the school record at the pole vault, with a height of 3.05 meters. The Millersville University team left Bucknell with many of our own students qualifying to compete in the PSAC championships.

Elicia Anderson, Rebekah Moore, and Brittany Arnold all qualified for the women’s 3,000 meter run. For the men’s team, Josh Foulds and Jim Boyer previously qualified for the PSAC championships, and they ran qualifying times at Bucknell as well. Keith Ogden and Derrick Bass also qualified for the championships on the men’s team.

The championships will be held on Feb. 27 and 28 in Edinboro. Chrissy Savage qualified for the 400 meter and the 200 meter races in the PSAC championships. Emily Francisco ran a mile in a little over five minutes, which qualified her in the one mile run. She qualified in the 800 meter run as well. Stephen Boyd qualified in the long jump and in the triple jump.

Other notable successes for Millersville students include Sarah Mulvey and Michelle Blum, who finished first and second in the 800 meter run. Jess Ryan finished fourth in the long jump. “Yesterday’s meet was fun, I was happy that I ran a seasonal best in the mile (5:30), but disappointed in my 800 time because it was three seconds slower than I ran two weeks ago. However, I think in general everyone did a good job and tried their best. The friendliness and team spirit on our team makes every meet fun,” said Mulvery, who finished first in the 800 meter run.

The next track meet is on Feb. 19. Both the men’s and the women’s teams will be competing at the Susquehanna Invitational in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. After that, their next competition will be at the PSAC championships.

Senior wrestler Jarrett Hostetter notched his 97th career win on Saturday as he inched towards 100 victories in his tenure at Millersville University. While it was a good for Hostetter as an individual, the team’s string of losses in dual meets continued as they dropped both matches in the tri-meet against Army and Sacred Heart University.

Hostetter’s two wins improved his overall season record to 20-5 as fellow sophomore teammate Shane Smith notched his 20th win on the day as well, Smith’s current record on the year is 20-7. However, this would be the only bright spot for an injury riddled team that has not won a dual match since Jan. 16.

The Marauders traveled to West Point, New York with the hopes of erasing their string of bad luck with a couple of wins. However, it ended up to be an all too familiar story for the struggling Marauders as they returned home empty handed at the hands of defeat. They lost 37-6 against Army and 30-15 versus Sacred Heart.

Through no fault of their own, the Marauders had to forfeit two matches against Army and one against Sacred Heart, something that has been a constant for most of the season. The team unfortunately does not have any healthy wrestlers to fill in 141-pound class thus essentially starting off each match 0-6. Against Army the Marauders also forfeited at the 133-pound class which basically provided Army with a 12-0 cushion to begin the match.

Hostetter and senior Jeremy Brooks were the only Marauders to notch victories against Army with each winning by decision. Hostetter won at the 157-pound spot with a score of 3-1, while Brooks won 3-2 at the 165-pound weight class. The two wins were not nearly enough for the young Marauders squad as they lost the first and last four matches of the meet.

Following the loss to Army the Marauders squared off against Sacred Heart. They were able to place freshman Tim Yoon into the 133-pound spot to tie the score at 6-6 after the second match. However, they had to forfeit the next match at 141-pounds again and then were only able to get wins from Hostetter and Smith throughout the rest of the dual. Hostetter again won by decision 5-2, and Smith recorded his 12th pin of the season 2:50 into the match.

The losses over the weekend dropped the Marauders dual meet record for the season to a paltry 3-13-1. It is difficult to blame the poor record to the individuals on the team as they have had to battle numerous injuries and inexperience throughout the course of the season. The Marauders have had nine freshman compete this year and have had patchwork rosters going in to most of their matches. “It’s extremely frustrating knowing we’re going to have to forfeit matches,” Hostetter explained, “We can be better than half of the teams we face but lose because of the forfeits.”

With the dual meet season winding down to its end, the Marauders are shifting their focus to sending as many wrestlers as possible to nationals. “We’re going to have to work harder and stay focused and not let the early season downfalls get to us,” Hostetter said, “The most important of the season is coming up.”

And as for Hostetter reaching the plateau of 100 career wins, “I’d rather do well at Nationals,” he said, “I mean I think about it, but its not as important as doing well at the end of the season. And it’s great for the program because it shows the kids can come in and successfully perform as a part of Millersville wrestling.”

Anybody who watched even a few plays of the alleged all-star game can agree that any player who was giving a 40 percent effort was working twice as hard as their opponent.

On ESPN “First Take” Marcellus Wiley told a story about his first Pro Bowl appearance. He had no idea what the etiquette was on how hard to try so he decided to work the first play at about 50 percent, the next thing he knew he had blown past perennial all-pro left tackle Chris Samuels for a sack.

Samuels glared at the fresh faced Wiley and said “Oh you want to play for real huh?” Wiley said he dialed it back to about 20 percent for the rest of the game after that. Please do not interpret this as a complaint, because if I was an NFL player why would I bother risking injury in a game that means as much as a game of Madden?

The NFL outsmarted itself by moving the game the week before the Super Bowl. Their logic was a two-pronged version of stupidity. Part one was that the average football fan would miss the gridiron in the week off before the Super Bowl. Part two was that by the time the Pro Bowl would roll around after the Super Bowl in past seasons, the average fan did not care anymore.

The biggest problem I see in this flawed logic is that players from the two Super Bowl teams cannot play. It is pretty hard to get excited about an all-star game when a lot of the all-stars are not even playing. Fourteen players from the Saints and Colts combined missed Sunday’s game because they obviously had bigger fish to fry. Add to that 17 more who missed the game with various injuries and it’s not even an all-star game, it is a mediocre-and-above contest. To put it in perspective, of the six quarterbacks actually voted into the pro bowl, only Aaron Rodgers played in the game.

Instead of having these guys waste their time in a game where they rightfully do no put out any effort in a meaningless game, let’s see a skills competition. I am proposing a collection of different challenges for the various positions ranging from 40 yard dash, rep test on bench press, a quarterback challenge, obstacle course, etc. I personally would love to see who can bench press 225 pounds the most times. I miss the days of the old quarterback challenge on CBS.

In regard to that other bowl that probably a few more people watched, there is one thing that has been sticking in my craw. I am so sick of hearing the Peyton Manning detractors say how this game hurts his legacy, and that it proves he is not an all-time great.

This is ridiculous to the point of being almost offensive. Manning was 31-45 for 333 yards, one TD and one pick, these are hardly pedestrian numbers. Everybody is going to kill him for the late game interception by Tracy Porter, but if you look at the play again you cannot entirely blame Manning.

Did he telegraph the throw? Probably. Should the ball have gone somewhere else? Maybe. But like the saying goes, it takes two to tango. Though Manning did not say so in his post-game news conference, it was clear he was not the only one at fault. He kept repeating that “Porter made a great play and made a great break on the ball,” which was true.

Peyton failed to mention the half-hearted route by Reggie Wayne. There is no way Wayne should let Porter ever get underneath him on a slant pattern. Even if Porter did flat out beat Wayne to the ball, it would be nice to see a wide receiver bail out his quarterback once in awhile.

The interception aside, Manning performed extremely well, and was statistically better than his first appearance on the grand stage. All of you Manning haters need to understand he is an all-time great.

The men ran third in their heat, and although they finished 14 overall, the time was more than enough to set a new Millersville University record.

The in-house record was previously held by Adam Malloy, Wyatt Hall, Akil Stokes, and Nick Sperry and had been untouched since 2007. The current team outpaced the old time by more than two seconds.

On Feb. 13 the men’s track and field runners will participate in the Bucknell Winter Classic in Lewisburg, Pa. The meet is scheduled to last all day. Later the same week the team heads to Selinsgrove, Pa. for the Susquehanna Invitational.

“I think the team did very well and we stuck together. We knew that not all of us were swimming our best events,” senior swimmer Bre Martinez said. Despite this, the team placed in the top five in 19 events at the meet.

The Marauder’s stood out in the meet’s relay races. In the 200-yard Medley, Millersville had three teams finish in the top five. Coming in third with a time of 2:00.57 was the freshman team of Laura Steinagel, Arielle Walbert, Kelsie Jones, and Sarah Bernhardt. The two other teams came in third and fifth.

Later in the meet, the 200-yard freestyle showed the strengths of the swim team again. Jones, Maribeth Jaeske, Lauren Jendzurski, and Christin Neville tied for first place with a team from East Stroudsburg University. Both teams had a time of 1:16.15 for the race.

Freshman Bernhardt finished in first place in the 100-yard freestyle with an time of 54.70. In the 50-yard freestyle Bernhardt earned fourth place. Bernhardt qualified for the PSACs in both events.

In the 1650-yard freestyle, Walbert made Millersville proud by coming in first place with a time of 18:44.96, more than 11 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

The seventh event of the meet, the 100-yard backstroke, Jones led the pack to a first place finish, earning her place in the PSAC Championships.

On Feb. 18, the swimming Lady Marauders head to Mechanicsburg, Pa. for the PSAC Championships. The team is excited for the upcoming event, “I’m nervous for PSACS because I know this is my last real chance. I would love to go out with a bang,” Martinez said.

As a departing senior, she also had some advice for any incoming swimmers. “For all the new recruits…have fun but remember this is a team and we always stick together and try our hardest.” The Championship meet runs through Sunday, Feb. 21.

It was at St. Mary's where Ruth learned the game of baseball. He eventually caught the eye of pro scouts, and landed a contract with the minor league Baltimore Orioles. Ruth was then traded to the Boston Red Sox where he was a starting pitcher from 1914 to 1919.

On Saturday the baseball community celebrated the birthday of the game’s greatest player, Babe Ruth. Ruth would have been 115 years old. He was born in 1895 in Baltimore and spent most of his youth in St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys.

It was at St. Mary’s where Ruth learned the game of baseball. He eventually caught the eye of pro scouts, and landed a contract with the minor league Baltimore Orioles. Ruth was then traded to the Boston Red Sox where he was a starting pitcher from 1914 to 1919.

In December of 1919 Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees in the most famous transaction in sports history. In 1920, his first year with the Yankees Ruth hit 54 home runs; in the previous year he only hit 29.

Ruth quickly became the hottest ticket in New York and the Yankees were able build the original Yankee Stadium in 1923. It was literally, “the house that Ruth built.” The Great Bambino also was the first person to hit a home run during the first game at Yankee Stadium.

In 1927 Ruth and the rest of the Yankees had a season that many have deemed the greatest sports team in history. They had a record of 110-44 and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. Also during the 1927 season, Ruth hit a record setting 60 home runs that would stand until 1961 when Roger Marris would break the record.

At the end of his career, in 1935, Ruth held 17 major records including those for a single season as well as over a career. Today, however, Ruth only holds on to four records: Career slugging percentage (.690), career on base plus slugging percentage (1.164), most extra base hits in a season (119), and the most times reaching base in a season (379).

Lucky for Ruth those records that remain in his name will more than likely stay that way. However, for baseball those records that Ruth once held are now questioning the sanctity of the game, most notably the home run records.

Currently Barry Bonds holds both the single season home run record (73) as well as the career home run record (762). Bonds passed Mark McGwire for the single season record. McGwire recently admitted to using steroids for the better part of a decade, and now he is back in the game.

Performance enhancing substances are ruining the game. Not just for the fans, but also for the players. Despite the fact that using these enhancing substances may give you a better season, you have to think about the effects to your reputation.

Even if a player is speculated to have taken such substances the media immediately shines a negative light and questions their ability as a player. Knowing the consequences, players are still routinely getting caught taking such substances.

Babe Ruth will always be a legend in sports history. I also don’t see any player in today’s game coming close to his greatness and his lasting legacy. As they said in Sandlot, “A hero get remembered, but a legend never dies.”

Despite tragedy just hours before the opening ceremonies of the 21st Olympic Games; tradition carried on in Vancouver, Canada.

The first Olympic Games can be traced back as far as 776 B.C. They were dedicated to the Olympian gods but banned in 393 A.D. when Emperor Theodosius prohibited all pagan cults.

The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia which functioned as a meeting place for religious and political practices. The site of Olympia remained until it was destroyed by an earthquake in the sixth century A.D.

Regardless of social class, all free male Greek citizens were allowed to participate. Unlike today, women were not only not allowed to participate; but married women were not even allowed to attend.

Events that took place were running, the long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing and equestrian events. A combination of wrestling and boxing, called pankration, was also an event during the early days of the Olympic Games. The events only took one day until 684 B.C. when they were extended to three days and eventually five.

The International Olympic Committee was created on June 23, 1894 after a declaration from Baron Pierre de Coubertein that the Olympic Games would be re-established. Two years later, under the presidency of Grecian Dimetrius Vikelas the first Olympic Games in the modern era occurred in Athens, Greece. The IOC, with affiliate organizations such as the Committee for Fair Play and the World Olympian Association, is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement.

Today, the Olympics take place over a span of two weeks with 33 sports including both the summer and winter games.

Whether you are a dedicated Olympic fan rooting every night in front of the television for your favorite athlete or just watch the highlights so you are not left out at the water cooler; the Olympics, much like national holidays, is a brief time in history that unites us all and ignites a sense of pride in one’s country.

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games began with tragedy. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a luger from Georgia, died in an accident while practicing.

The track Kumaritashvili was practicing on has the longest drop of all luge courses at 152 meters. He was going 90 mph when he lost control of his sled, flew over a wall, and was thrown into a metal support beam. He was knocked unconscious immediately, given CPR and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There were two other accidents on the same luge track before Kumaritashvili’s death. According to Yahoo.com, on Friday, Armin Zoeggeler of Italy lost control was did injured. On Thursday, Romanian luger, Violeta Stramaturaru lost control and crashed. She was air-lifted from the track, but did not suffer any serious injuries.

After the death of Kumaritashvili, Olympic officials took precautions and made the track safer for athletes. The ice was shaved down and the walls were raised to prevent lugers from being thrown from the track.

Officials also shortened the track for male athletes, making them start at the female origin point; a full 600 feet shorter. Many lugers are discouraged by the shortening of the track. According to Bleachreport.com, USA Luge CEO Ron Rossi believes that the shortening of the track was made to accommodate less talented lugers and short handed the best athletes out of competition.

Shortening the track has created a new wave of problems. Only having a few practice runs, the lugers are unfamiliar with the opening stretch of the track.

The death of Kumaritashvili made the opening ceremony to the 2010 Winter Olympics a rather solemn one. The athletes were wearing black ribbons in remembrance of the fallen athlete.

Many people tuned into the Opening Ceremony to see if it would outdo the 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in Beijing. There were interesting aspects to the ceremony. Canada paid tribute to all of its regions by incorporating the history, cultural aspects, and beauty of each region.

There was a mechanical error in lighting the Olympic torch. It was the first torch to be lit indoors in the history of the Olympic Games. Basketball player Steve Nash; hockey star Wayne Gretsky; Women’s Athlete of the Century Senator Nancy Greene Raine; and former Olympic Speed Skater Catriona LeMay Doan, were all supposed to light the torch simultaneously. Four podiums were supposed to rise out of the floor and lead to the torch. Only three of the four podiums rose, so Wayne Gretsky left the stadium and lit the outdoor torch alone. The outdoor torch will remain lit throughout the Olympic Games.

The Opening Ceremony in Vancouver may not have been the best in recent history, but it will surely be remembered.
