The men’s basketball team could not seem to catch a break against the Mansfield Mounties. When they thought they saw some light at the end of the tunnel the Mounties were not far behind. The game involved a lot of back and forth action until Mansfield was able to finally emerge victorious. The score ended 82-70 leaving the Marauders with a road loss. This loss moves the Marauders record to 6-12 overall, with 4 wins and 10 losses in PSAC play.
The Mounties seemed to pull away when the scoreboard reached that five minute mark nearing the end of the second quarter. Mansfield took advantage of the Marauders’ struggle and pulled away by 12 points within the last five minutes. However, Millersville was never done trying throughout the course of the game. The men managed to forge forward in the first half by retying the scores and twice came within two points of taking the lead over the Mounties come the second half. But their effort fell short as the Mounties had no let ups that could have been used to Millersville’s advantage.
As the clock was winding down in the second half, the men were only starting to heat things up. With under three minutes to go in the second half the men were only trailing by six points, which equaled a score of 68-62. A Mansfield player, Kevonte McClain, completed a three point play in the time frame of under three minutes, and by the time the Marauders could pull themselves back together a 7-0 run occurred in only a span of 31 seconds. This seven point deficit opened the gates for the Mounties to continue running. To confidently close the game, Mansfield went eight for eight from the free throw line in those crucial, final three minutes.
The men are commended for their effort on the floor as they were not far behind in the game the entire contest. Two Marauders hit double digits, as both Larry Grant and Mike Seibert tallied 14 points apiece. Guard, Anthony Coleman, netted a clean 11 points individually, and forward, Elijah Obade, finished strong with his third consecutive double-double. He ended the game with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Millersville will have a home court advantage on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 as they play host to Bloomsburg University who is currently leading the PSAC East play. Please mark your calendars so you can come out and cheer on our Marauders at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Within the past two weeks, Aurielle Mosley has really made a name for herself in PSAC East play. Not only did she help the Marauders to two victories over Shippensburg and Mansfield, but she also contributed to the team’s success, as they are one game away from first place in PSAC East play.
In the victories over both Shippensburg and Mansfield, Mosley put up sufficient numbers. She averaged 19.5 points and hit the boards with an astounding 12 rebounds. The Marauders center scored 17 points in the first half of the team’s win over Shippensburg last Wednesday.
Over the weekend on the road at Mansfield University, the Mounties could not handle Mosley as she lit up the floor with 22 points, 15 boards and stuffed three shot attempts. She registered another double-double that was number 11 of the season and the 30th overall double-double of her career! To stun Mansfield even more, she swooshed two three-pointers from downtown.
Mosley’s PSAC East honor is her second of the season. She shares this outstanding honor with Bloomsburg’s shooting guard, Dana Weller, who the Marauders will host this coming Wednesday night at Pucillo. Please be on the lookout for another fantastic match-up of two great teams who are fighting for the number one spot.

The women’s lacrosse team competed at Bucknell University this past Saturday. The event, titled “Bison Open,” is an annual event that the Track & Field team has been going to for some time now. However, this year was one especially for the books!
On day one Sarah Mulvey’s 5,000-meter run qualified for the PSAC Championships, and day two was no different. Elicia Anderson, on day two, won her 3,000-meter dash event while re-breaking the previous record that was set by her last year. She ran it in a time of 9:55.40.
Anderson was not the only one to have a great day on the track. Katherine Lennex also surpassed her personal best distant jump of 11.09 meters. At this year’s Bison Open she competed in the triple jump and sprang a distance of 11.14 meters, which beat her personal best jump record by .05.
Another competitor, Harelee Staller, placed seventh in the long jump, while only being 0.36 meters away from the current school record distance, which she also set last December.
In the 200-meter, Chrissy Savage ran herself to an eighth place finish in her race. Savage’s time slides by her day one time.
The Marauders will be heading on the road this Saturday and competing in New York City at the New Balance Invitational.

Our women kicked off the first of two games on Saturday on the road at Mansfield University, as the women and men both played at Decker Gymnasium. The women were giving everyone a little bit of unwanted gray hair as they struggled early in the game, but later put their fans and coaches at ease as they upped the ante on the floor. They put up an astonishing 17 point deficit, outscoring Mansfield 43-26 in the second half. Despite their rocky first half performance the Marauders eased by the Mounties with a 71-59 victory road win. The win over the Mounties puts the Marauders at a 12-6 overall record and a 9-5 PSAC standing.
In the first half the Marauders fell to a 31 percentile in shooting from the floor, which left them to go into the locker room trailing by five points with a score of 33-28. The women’s defensive efforts paid off and compromised for their shooting as they put on the pressure in the first half. Not only did they get 10 turnovers from the Mounties, but it also kept them in the game.
As the second half got underway, Mansfield’s first half performance was shut down quickly. Our women went on a jaw dropping 25-7 run in the first 10 minutes of the final half. They rapidly put up points on the scoreboard, as 53-40 appeared quicker than Mansfield probably expected.
Aurielle Mosley’s 11th double-double contributed greatly to the run Millersville had in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Mosley netted 22 points, 13 of those points being from the second half. Her leadership effort showed offensively as her 11th double-double this season equaled her 30th overall career double-double. Not only did she register three blocks but she also played guard by swooshing two three-pointers from the arc.
The tables turned in the second half as Millersville was having success and Mansfield fell into the 28th percentile of shooting from the floor. Millersville turned their first half 31 percentage into a second half 50 percentage as they connected with more shots in the second half, coinciding nicely with the score.
Our high scorers and contributors for the game included Sophia Waters, who finished with 18 points and led the team with four individual steals. Point guard, Mashira Newman, was second in command in scoring as she scored 14 points. Newman is now only 17 points away from her own accomplishment of 1,000 career points. Along with the players’ success, we cannot forget about Head Coach Mary Fleig, as she celebrated her 10th straight win against Mansfield. This leaves her current record between meetings with the Mountaineers at 42-2.
Please come out and support your lady Marauders as they host PSAC East rival Bloomsburg University on Wednesday, February 1. This is a crucial game for the Marauders. They are only one game out of first place in the East as they hold a record of 9-5. The game is set to kick off at 6 P.M. at Pucillo Gymnasium with the men’s game immediately following at 8 P.M. We cannot wait to see you there!

James McBride, who had great success last semester in the fall of 2011, is now back at it once again! He earned a fifth place finish in his event. Teammate Jeff Robinson placed sixth in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 22.77. Robinson had also already qualified from his finish on day one of the Open, when he successfully crossed the finish line with a time of 22.75 seconds.
The men will continue with their season as they pack their bags and head to New York City, with the women’s team as well, to compete in the New Balance Invitation. Good luck, guys!

For the women’s swim team it was the first swim meet after the semester break. The ladies traveled to Kutztown University on Jan. 14 for their sixth meet of the season, and for Millersville’s first loss of the season at 74 points to Kutztown’s 120. Though junior Sarah Bernhardt won both freestyle events, the 50 and the 100-yard events, Kutztown managed to win eight of the other nine events.
This was Bernhardt’s third time of the season winning both events in the same meet. She finished with a time of 25.37 in the 50-yard freestyle, collecting nine points, and with a time of 53.63 seconds; a full three seconds ahead of the next place finisher. It was her second best time of the season and a second PSAC qualifier in the event, Bernhardt finished with a total of 22 points earned.
Another junior, Arielle Walbert, added 18 of Millersville’s 74 points, swimming the team’s season’s best in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and taking second place with a time of 11:24.42. Walbert was joined by teammates Rebecca Anderson, Emma Viets and Adriana Rodriquez in the 400-yard freestyle relay which took first with a time of 4:00.01, earning 11 points for the Marauders.
Brigid Mary McDonnell added to the points, finishing second in the 200-yard IM with a 2:21.45, and in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.50. A freshman, McDonnell added 12 points to the team’s total.
Three days later the Marauders hosted Lock Haven at the Pucillo Natatorium, a second loss for the women’s swim team at 121-84, Lock Haven. However, several of Millersville’s swimmers swam season best times, junior Arielle Walbert among them. Walbert finished third in the 1000-free with a best time of 11:14.14.
Over the course of the meet Walbert earned two more best times, a time of 2:17.65 in the 200-yard IM, and a 1:05.31 and a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, adding 15 points to the team’s total. Freshman Ashley Kichline also earned a season personal best, with a second place finish in 100-yard back with a time of 1:03.80.
The season’s best just kept rolling in, with sophomore Amanda Thomas earning two, with a 2:02.40, first-place finish in the 200-yard free, not just a personal best, but a team best as well. She also took second place in the 100-yard free with a time of 56.69. Sophomore Rebecca Anderson also earned a best time in the same event, with a third-place finish and a time of 58.00.
Brigid Mary McDonnell earned a first place finish in 100-yard Back with a 1:11.30, as well as a second place finish in the 200-yard IM behind Walbert with a 2:17.88. Sarah Bernhardt took first in the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 50 free. Her times in both events are PSAC qualifiers and are her second best times of the season in each event.
The meet that was supposed to be at Randolph Macon on Saturday, Jan. 21 was canceled but was followed up by East Stroudsburg meeting them at home in the Pucillo Natatorium. It was started by Walbert setting the Millersville 200-yard butterfly record, taking first in the event with 2:17.35. The previous record was set in 2009 by Brittany Neifert at 2:17.58. Walbert’s time earned her a qualifying time for the PSAC Championships.
Though the Marauders took first place in seven out of the eleven events they lost, the final score being 143-115. Sarah Bernhardt earned three first places, in the 50 free with a 25.15, the 100 free with a 55.05, and the 200 free with a 1:58.99. The last two times earned her PSAC qualifying times in both events.
Freshman Ashley Kichline also added to the tally of first places, finishing first in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. She finished in 1:04.27 in the 100 and in 2:18.14 in the 200. In the 400 yard freestyle relay the ‘A’ team made up of Bernhardt, McDonnell, Kichline and Amanda Thomas finished six seconds ahead of the second place team with a 3:48.19.
This next Saturday the women travel to East Stroudsburg for the ESU Open; the meet starts at 12 P.M.

Wednesday evening, the women’s basketball team came out strong against Shippensburg after a hard-hitting loss to Kutztown. Millersville and Shippensburg met 82 times over 90 years, each having won 41 games. The Marauders (11-6, 8-5 PSAC), determined to defeat the Raiders (8-9, 5-8 PSAC), opened the game on a 12-0 run.
Millersville kept the lead throughout the first half with their largest first half total at 59 percent. Aurielle Mosley had a team-high of 17-points after the first. In the second half, the Raiders attempted to bring down the Marauders’ lead.
Millersville’s Dana Wert hit a three-pointer getting the momentum back and initiating a 10-0 run. In the last four minutes, the Marauders had a 17-point lead, 71-54. The Raiders brought Millersville’s lead down to 15 points until Sophia Waters hit two free throws with under a minute to go.
Shippensburg hit one last bucket in the paint before Millersville cinched a win, 75-60. Millersville’s offense performed a season-high with multiple players in the double digits including Mosley, Marshira Newman and Carly Gallagher. Newman is now 31 points away from a 1,000-point career that would make her the 18th Millersville women’s basketball player to eclipse the mark.
This Saturday, the Marauders travel to Mansfield.

On Saturday, January 28, the men’s wrestling team had a tough schedule. They had three matches in the Mid-Penn Duals. At the end of the day on Saturday, the men came out with 1 win and 2 losses. They faced Thaddeus Stevens, York and Shippensburg.
The men swept by Thaddeus Stevens with a score of 41 to 12. Later in the day, they faced York College where the opposite effect occurred from the morning’s success. Our Marauders fell to York 35-15. Following their frustrating loss to York the men tried a third time to connect with a victory, but fell short, as Shippensburg was too much to handle. Millersville suffered another devastating loss with a score of 28 to 12.
You can keep up with the Marauders wrestling team as they head on the road February 4 to Boiling Springs, North Carolina, where they will compete in a Tri-Meet.

Elijah Obade had a phenomenal night against Shippensburg Wednesday. The junior center totaled 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks, rocketing Millersville to a 75-70 home victory. In the first half alone, Obade scored 17 points, had 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks giving him his second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season.
The win upped Millersville to a record of 6-11 overall, and 4-9 in the PSAC, closing the gap on the fourth playoff spot in the PSAC East.
Shippensburg came into the game as the top shooting team in the PSAC, helping them shoot 45.8 percent from the field against a stingy Marauder defense, the very same that capitalized off of 17 turnovers scoring 18 points.
Cruising on Obade’s imposing first half, the Marauders entered the break with a 39-28 lead, their largest of the season. The Red Raiders found a rhythm at the start of the second half, outscoring Millersville 42-36 despite the Marauders starting the half with a 7-0 run to build their lead to 16 points. Shippensburg substantially cut that lead down to as few as three points on two separate occasions.
Shippensburg Guard Sam Pygatt’s layup with 8:57 left in the game made the score 54-51, but Millersville Guard C.J. Scott instantaneously responded with back-to-back scores to secure the Marauder’s lead, never letting the Red Raiders come within 5 points for the rest of the game.
From start to finish, Millersville led the game with the significant help of Obade. Larry Grant also had an admirable game shooting 5 for 10 from the field, and 5 for 5 on the line for a total of 16 points on top of 5 additional assists. Anthony Coleman increased his streak of consecutive games in double figures to 5 with 11 points from shooting 4 for 8.
The Marauders travel to Mansfield to face a decent Mountaineer team with a positive home record.

The Marauders Softball team prepares for a new season with a roster listing 10 of the 25 players as freshman. The rest of the team comes in at 3 sophomores, 1 red-shirted sophomore, 1 junior and 1 senior. With a relatively young team there are high hopes for this season’s team.
The team recently participated in their fourth appearance at the Lancaster Jingle Bell Run/Walk to help those with arthritis. The team also held camps for young softball players as well as for softball coaches. The money raised from these camps will benefit scholarships and will go towards the team’s spring trip to Claremont, Florida in March.
