Millersville’s track and field teams went to the New Balance Invitational on Saturday, February 4, 2012 in New York City. In the second day of the invitational, two Millersville runners qualified for the PSAC championships.
Both runners James McBride and Kevin Diflorio came from the MU men’s team. McBride placed 19th in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:11.18. This time is a high for the track and field team for this season.
Diflorio received his qualification for the PSAC indoor championships with the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.31. He placed 53rd in this field and set his career high. He was just 3 seconds short of the school record set in 2000. Another Marauder runner, Seth Hibbs, was just short of qualifying and short of his personal best.
Harlee Staller, from the women’s team, finished 50th in the long jump on the first day of competition, and also placed 26th in the triple jump on the second day of competition. This freshman reached her career best this past weekend and also a team best distance for this season so far.
Millersville’s track and field starts up again next weekend with two competitions. On February 10 they head back to New York City for the Lafayette Rider Winter Games and the next day, February 11, they go to Lewisburg for the Bucknell Winter Classic. Both competitions are limited squad events.

It was the last swim meet of the regular season for the Marauder women’s swimming team this past Saturday. The East Stroudsburg Invitational, taking place away at East Stroudsburg, usually is the last chance for many PSAC swimmers to make qualifying times in the different events for the PSAC Championships. Millersville took only a few girls from the team to the meet on Saturday but still managed to pick up several top finishes in the individual events.
Millersville’s only first place finish of the day was in the 200-yard free, made by Amanda Thomas who finished with a time of 2:01.39. Her teammate Victoria DeTample finished the same event in third place with a time of 2:07.85. DeTample finished second place in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:31.52.
In the 100 individual medley and also the 200-yard breastroke, Adriana Rodriguez finished in second place with times of 1:19.08 in the 100-IM and 2:48.42 in the 200-Breast.
With their regular season now finished, the Marauders have the PSAC Championship meet at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA from February 16-19. The three day meet will include the four Marauder swimmers who have qualified, competing in a total of 10 different individual events.

On Saturday, Millersville entered West Chester’s gymnasium with one thing on their mind: vengeance. Just three weeks prior, the Golden Rams defeated the Marauders on their own court. It was clear the Marauders were determined to serve it right back, opening the game with 3 after 3 and taking a 19-point lead until halftime.
The first half was dominated by the Marauders, who shot 49-percent from the field and hit all five free throws. Millersville also drained five three-pointers, three of which belonged to Carly Gallagher, redshirt freshman.
The Golden Rams returned from the half, resolute in taking back the court. West Chester hit seven of its first ten buckets, cutting down Millersville’s lead.
The Marauders turned the ball over 15 times in the second, allowing the Golden Rams to outscore them 43-27 in the second half. With under a minute left, West Chester hit a three-pointer bringing the game to 69-66.
Millersville’s Mashira Newman turned the ball over with 14 seconds remaining. Millersville defended the perimeter strong making it difficult for West Chester to make a bucket. As the clock expired West Chester’s Meghan Kerrigan hit a two-point jumper, solidifying Millersville’s victory, 69-68.
Millersville’s Aurielle Mosley had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Gallagher had a strong game with 18 points as well as Miesha Cousins with a career high of 10 points.
The Marauders (13-7, 10-6 PSAC) get a three-day break before playing Cheyney (0-20, 0-16 PSAC) in Pucillo gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Millersville men’s basketball team took on West Chester University on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 4 P.M. in Hollinger Field House. Millersville was defeated 81-70. West Chester sprinted to a 17 point half time lead and their offense was on all night. Millersville took a while to get it started and their last lead of the game was lost with more than 18 minutes left in the first half; then they just could not get that lead back for the rest of the game.
Millersville’s Larry Grant did, however, score a game high 24 points but that just could not help the Marauders get ahead in this game.
The Marauders began this game trailing the Golden Rams for the fourth playoff spot in the PSAC East. Now, after losing this game to the Rams, Millersville is a total of three games behind West Chester with only six games left to play till the playoffs.
The next shot the Marauders have is at home against Cheney on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 in Pucillo Gym starting at 8 P.M. The Marauders have six games left facing Cheney, Kutztown, East Stroudsburg, Mansfield, Shippensburg, and Bloomsburg. Millersville will have to come out of the gate strong against all these teams if they want a chance at the playoffs.

Redshirt junior guard Mashira Newman reached a landmark not many achieve in their college careers, her one thousandth point.
In her 2011-12 season, she played 20 games and averaged 13.3 points in each with a field goal percentage of 37.2. Her 3-point field goal percentage stood at 34.0. Despite her impressive statistics as a shooter, she also shined on defense, averaging 2.8 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game, as well as 5.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists.
Her talents as a basketball player began at Upper Dublin High School in North Hills, PA. She was born on May 11, 1990 and grew up with three siblings. Her sister Monica was also a member of Millersville’s Women’s Basketball team, playing alongside Mashira in her 2009-10 season.
In her last season during 2010-11, Newman appeared in every game and started all but one. She proved to be a true threat on all areas of the court averaging a team-leading 36.2 minutes per game, shooting the second most points on the team at 426, and averaging 14.7 points per game, earning a rank as the 10th best in the PSAC conference.
She held an impressive 41.9 field goal percentage throughout the season, and shot a career-high of 30 points against Shippensburg on February 23, the most points scored by a Marauder since the 2005-06 season. Her defensive playing was equally as effective as she had 118 steals during the season, leading the PSAC conference.
Her outstanding season performance earned her the All-PSAC East Second Team Honors. Her success undoubtedly carried over to her 2011-12 season as she continues to enthuse her coaches and peers.

The women’s basketball team hosted the Lady Huskies of Bloomsburg University last Wednesday. Our Marauders had a picture perfect first half that led them into the locker room at half time with a 20+ point advantage. The half time score was a whopping 42-21.
However, Bloomsburg was not done fighting when they came out of the locker room to start the second half. The Huskies went on a 20-9 run, stunning Millersville as they tried to regroup once their lead was cut 49-41.
Millersville could not hold on to their lead and turned the game over to the Huskies with an ending score of 77-73. This loss puts Millersville’s record at an overall 12-7 and 9-6 in PSAC East play.
When the Marauders took the floor on Wednesday they knew this PSAC East match-up would be a big game for them. It was a big game all around as freshman, Carly Gallagher, competed against her sister, Kelsey Gallagher, who both play the guard position. Mashira Newman was at the peak of her career as she came into the competition only 17 points away from scoring her one thousandth point, and lastly, the team was only one win away from first place in the East.
The Bloomburg Huskies came into the competition with an overall record of 17-4 and were ahead of Millersville in PSAC East standing with an 11-4 advantage in the books. The Huskies came out in the second half as a new team. Not only did they stop the Marauders with a 20-9 run, but Bloomsburg was still trailing. With the clock now under 4 minutes it was a neck and neck battle. However, Alyssa Flanagan made a bucket from the paint that lifted the Huskies over the Marauders for their first lead of the entire game with a score of 63-62. But Millersville answered quickly as Aurielle Mosley went two for two from the free throw line to put the Marauders at a 64-63 one point lead.
Meanwhile, Bloomsburg’s Kayla Oxenrider got in the groove as she made her first of two three pointers late in the second half. Oxenrider’s shot behind the arc put the Huskies back on top with a two point lead, 66-64. Oxenrider’s shooting spree continued and she finished the game as the point leader for Bloomsburg by netting a game-high of 23 points.
Millersville’s Newman scored a three pointer to put the Marauders within one, 71-70. Still, the Huskies were on point with clenching the victory by making their last three foul shots that would retire the game with a final score of 77-73.
Bloomsburg’s Kelsey Gallagher trailed right behind Oxenrider’s game high in points with 18. For the Marauders, Mosley and Newman both tied for the game-high of 20 points a piece. Carly Gallagher had the second highest point total on the team, registering 11 for the evening.
Mosley also scooped up 10 rebounds and completed her 11th double-double of the season. The Marauders’ point guard, Newman, now has a career total of 1,003 points and became the 18th Marauder of all time to reach such an outstanding milestone.
Bloomsburg has won the last three straight contests against Millersville. However, this duel is not over for either Bloomsburg, Millersville, or the Gallagher sisters. They will meet again in Bloomsburg, PA on February 25 as the Bloomsburg Huskies will take their turn as host.

For the past 44 years, Millersville’s lacrosse team has built up quite a history. During this time, the team has compiled a 254-251-6 record, with three PSAC tournament championships and one national championship win. Last year, four seniors led a small roster to a 4-10 record in the PSAC, arguably the toughest women’s lacrosse conference in NCAA Division II.
The roster this year features five freshmen, seven sophomores, seven juniors, and a single senior. Captains Katie Moatz (senior) and Ashley Henderson (junior) will lead the way, guiding the young team throughout the 2012 season.
On the sidelines, assistant coach Jo Caminiti remains. Starting this year, however, the Lady Marauders will be lead by head coach Mia Hall.
Hall is a former Marauder herself, graduating in 2007. During her career at Millersville, Hall collected All-PSAC First Team honors, as well as IWLCA All-Region and Academic All-American. She led the team in ground balls all four years of her career, ultimately totaling 156.
“My experience as a student athlete here was amazing,” said Hall during an interview. “Division II was the perfect balance of athletics and academics for me, and I felt as though Millersville definitely gave me the tools to thrive and succeed not only on the field but in the classroom as well.”
Prior to taking the head coaching position here at Millersville, Coach Hall spent two years as the head coach of local rival Shippensburg University. When asked about coming home to her alma mater, Hall was ecstatic. “Since I knew I wanted to be a collegiate lacrosse coach, Millersville has always been my dream job. There is something about this University and the community around it that always felt like home to me,” she said.
“There are many traditions that Coach Waltman had instilled in her players and the program throughout the 33 years she was here. I feel very blessed to have taken over and to help keep those very important traditions alive. I think it’s very special that both my players and I played for the same program. We have this common bond, goal, and pride which will ultimately help to produce success,” Hall continues.
Hall has big plans for the Marauder lacrosse team this season. “My first expectation for the 2012 team is to first leave everything they have on the field every time they step on it. I preach this a lot to our team because if they give everything they can, they never have to look back and say ‘what if.’ Another expectation of mine is for them to work and support each other at all times on and off the field. It is very important that we create an environment that is built on ‘we’s and not ‘I’s. My final expectation this year is that they go out and prove themselves to the conference and continue to strive to build a name for themselves,” Hall says.
Coach Hall noted, though, that there is more to proving the Marauders’ power against their upcoming opponents. “This particular team is very special. From day one they have bought in [to the program] and have proven themselves not only to me but most importantly their teammates.”
The women’s lacrosse team will open the season on March 3 on the road at Seton Hill. The first home game will be March 17, when the Marauders host Mercy College. The first draw is set for 1 P.M.

Heading into what seemed to be their toughest match of the season, Millersville looked to abandon their label of underdog against the Huskies this past Wednesday. Forward Jaymes Miller scored the opening basket 49 seconds into the game to give the Marauders an early lead which would never be overcome in their 75-68 victory.
Bloomsburg entered the game with confidence tied for first in the PSAC East, but this did not stop Millersville from shooting 49 percent from the field. The win kept them within reach for the number 4 seed in the PSAC tournament, two games behind West Chester. Mike Seibert vastly contributed, hitting 9 of 12 free throws, and two 3-pointers for a total of 15 points, tying Demond Vance’s season-high of 15 points.
The Marauders led 28-24 with 2:47 left in a demanding first half. Jim Kelleher managed to close the gap off the bench with a 3-pointer, starting a 12-4 run to end the first half. During that stretch, three of Millersville’s baskets were 3-pointers, two of which were made my Kelleher, and one by Seibert. Vance was also sent to the line with 18 seconds left to make the score 40-28 at the break.
At the start of the second half, no time was wasted to increase Millersville’s lead to 15 from Seibert’s 3-pointer on their first possession. The Huskies, however, executed an impressive 16-5 run to diminish the Marauder’s lead to 3 with 9:32 left in the game. Elijah Obade stepped up against an aggressive Bloomsburg defense with a dunk and 3-point play to end their run, but not their assault.
Dontahe Jordan of Bloomsburg, who finished the game with a season-high 24 points, was able to create a 3-point play to cut Millersville’s lead to 2, making it 60-58 with 5:45 left. He then put the Huskies within 1 point after a 3-pointer with 3:43 to go.
On the Marauder’s next possession, Anthony Coleman followed a missed shot with a tip-in to turn nothing into something. Following a miss from Bloomsburg, Seibert was sent to the line to sink 2 foul shots, securing their lead and eventually their victory. Millersville made 7 of 10 foul shots in the final 2 minutes of the game. The defense also managed to hold the Huskies to a mere five points in the final 3. Obade finished yet again with double-figure rebounds for his fourth consecutive game.
The win gave Bloomsburg its first back-to-back losses of the season, while also holding them to shooting 38.5 percent from the field- their lowest percentage in the previous nine games. The Marauders travel to West Chester for what may be a season-deciding game on Saturday, February 4. With a victory over one of the top teams in the PSAC East, the Marauders are given an enormous boost of confidence, which could play a huge factor in their next game.

The men’s basketball team could not seem to catch a break against the Mansfield Mounties. When they thought they saw some light at the end of the tunnel the Mounties were not far behind. The game involved a lot of back and forth action until Mansfield was able to finally emerge victorious. The score ended 82-70 leaving the Marauders with a road loss. This loss moves the Marauders record to 6-12 overall, with 4 wins and 10 losses in PSAC play.
The Mounties seemed to pull away when the scoreboard reached that five minute mark nearing the end of the second quarter. Mansfield took advantage of the Marauders’ struggle and pulled away by 12 points within the last five minutes. However, Millersville was never done trying throughout the course of the game. The men managed to forge forward in the first half by retying the scores and twice came within two points of taking the lead over the Mounties come the second half. But their effort fell short as the Mounties had no let ups that could have been used to Millersville’s advantage.
As the clock was winding down in the second half, the men were only starting to heat things up. With under three minutes to go in the second half the men were only trailing by six points, which equaled a score of 68-62. A Mansfield player, Kevonte McClain, completed a three point play in the time frame of under three minutes, and by the time the Marauders could pull themselves back together a 7-0 run occurred in only a span of 31 seconds. This seven point deficit opened the gates for the Mounties to continue running. To confidently close the game, Mansfield went eight for eight from the free throw line in those crucial, final three minutes.
The men are commended for their effort on the floor as they were not far behind in the game the entire contest. Two Marauders hit double digits, as both Larry Grant and Mike Seibert tallied 14 points apiece. Guard, Anthony Coleman, netted a clean 11 points individually, and forward, Elijah Obade, finished strong with his third consecutive double-double. He ended the game with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Millersville will have a home court advantage on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 as they play host to Bloomsburg University who is currently leading the PSAC East play. Please mark your calendars so you can come out and cheer on our Marauders at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Within the past two weeks, Aurielle Mosley has really made a name for herself in PSAC East play. Not only did she help the Marauders to two victories over Shippensburg and Mansfield, but she also contributed to the team’s success, as they are one game away from first place in PSAC East play.
In the victories over both Shippensburg and Mansfield, Mosley put up sufficient numbers. She averaged 19.5 points and hit the boards with an astounding 12 rebounds. The Marauders center scored 17 points in the first half of the team’s win over Shippensburg last Wednesday.
Over the weekend on the road at Mansfield University, the Mounties could not handle Mosley as she lit up the floor with 22 points, 15 boards and stuffed three shot attempts. She registered another double-double that was number 11 of the season and the 30th overall double-double of her career! To stun Mansfield even more, she swooshed two three-pointers from downtown.
Mosley’s PSAC East honor is her second of the season. She shares this outstanding honor with Bloomsburg’s shooting guard, Dana Weller, who the Marauders will host this coming Wednesday night at Pucillo. Please be on the lookout for another fantastic match-up of two great teams who are fighting for the number one spot.
