Throughout the spring semester, the Experiential Learning and Career Management (ELCM) has been offering free LinkedIn profile and resume reviews for all students. The event is held in Lyle Hall; scheduled times can be found on the university calendar.
No appointments are necessary–their are walk-in hours are available for resume critiques and LinkedIn social media profile reviews. ELCM works this event on a first come, first served basis.
LinkedIn is a great way for students to connect or reconnect with their classmates, colleagues, future employers and potential bosses. It also gives students an opportunity to provide a virtual resume online that is interactive.
The LinkedIn profile provides a nice snapshot of a student’s professional life that is available for the perusal of potential clients, prospects and colleagues. Students are advised to choose a headshot of themselves that shows them in a positive light.
Within LinkedIn, students are asked to create a summary, which is a piece of the profile that can and should be updated, changed or modified. This portion of the profile is stressed as very important, and should be “written to be read.” The use of good descriptive words is urged: students should strive for it to hit hard for those who are reading it. Students are also advised to spell-check and proofread their work. LinkedIn is a much more professional website then Facebook or Twitter, so keep this in mind when writing the summary.
LinkedIn allows students to make their profile public; this allows search engines to search for a specific student. The use of keywords within the summary is highly stressed; that makes it easier for other people to search. Also, students should utilize industry terms within the summary.
LinkedIn events provide information on upcoming events and conferences based on the student’s profile and their industry. It also allows for students to search for events themselves, and to see what is going on in their perspective industries. An exciting feature provided is that LinkedIn events allow students to see their connections that are attending.
