The Field Hockey team traveled to East Stroudsburg on Saturday for their final game of the 2012 season.
Millersville entered the contest, coming off a win against LIU, which clinched them a playoff spot. The girls ended their season on a high note, beating the Warriors 3-1, giving them momentum heading into the postseason.
They were slow to get started as they gave up the first goal of the game at 27:50 of the opening period. Lauren Ventrella, scored her tenth goal of the season for the Warriors, assisted by Brielle Kessel. The Marauders tied the game seconds before the period ended at 34:59, when Lauren Gerhart blasted one by Warriors goalie Sarah Dobroskey.
The scoring continued in the second half, when Katelyn Zapp scored at 51:56 off a penalty stroke, giving Millersville the 2-1 lead. Then at the 65 minute mark Megan Donlan scored the final goal for the Marauders. Millersville goalie Lauren Sotzin stood tall in net, making eight saves on nine shots to preserve the win. She was able to withstand the push from the Warriors in the second half, stopping all blasts fired her way.
Offensively the girls bombarded Dobroskey with shots, who managed to make five saves on eight attempts. They kept up the pressure the entire game, and outshot East Stroudsburg 15-11.
However, the win did not come easy with the Warriors matching the intensity of the Marauders in the second period. With both teams generating an offensive onslaught, the outcome hinged upon the defense and goaltender that responded more effectively.
In the end, it was Millersville who won the battle with Sotzin clearly outplaying Dobroskey. The lady Marauders can now focus their attention on their first round matchup in the PSAC Tournament against Bloomsburg. The Huskies, 14-4 overall this season, enter the contest as the defending league champions and the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Millersville, seeded No. 3 will travel to Bloomsburg on Tuesday with a start time of 4 p.m.
