MU field hockey ends eleven losing streak against Shippensburg

The last time that the Millersville Marauders won against the Shippensburg Raiders in field hockey was back in 1998. Over twenty games later and thirteen years, the lady Marauder field hockey team rose to a long awaited victory, marking the second top ten team they have won against so far this season.
The third game of the season took place at home on Saturday, September 10 in the Marauder Stadium. The game began with Shippensburg gaining the first goal by Katie Pufnack just six minutes into the game. Millersville managed to tie up the score shortly before the half with midfielder, sophomore Brittany Troutman, collecting a pass from Emily Litchford and sending it straight into the back of the goal. That made the score at half time 1-1.
The second half was a busy period, with Shippensburg making the majority of their total shots on goal. Millersville’s goalkeeper, Sarah Dickenson, was more than prepared to face the challenge, blocking 11 of the 13 shots on goal made by Shippensburg. She certainly had help from her defense, including her sister, Rachel Dickenson, a freshman defender. Rachel, among other things, managed to run down and prevent a two-on-one breakaway by Shippensburg offense from succeeding, close to fifty-six minutes into the game.
Soon after, Emily Fullerton, a freshman, with the help of Junior Ashley Weber, scored the goal that would be the eventual deciding factor of the game. Putting the ball into an empty net, Fullerton made the score 2-1, Millersville.
To make sure the lead was secured, with eight minutes left in the game Troutman, who had scored the first goal, put it in with help from freshman teammate Sarah Bomberger, who deflected it into the net. The Marauders then brought the score up 3-1. After last week’s defeat at the hands of number one UMass-Lowell (3-4), Millersville was determined to keep this one. A last minute goal was let in for Shippensburg, making the final score 3-2, and the second in a row loss for Shippensburg. Millersville continues their season with the next match being on Tuesday, September 13 at home against the Kutztown University Golden Bears.
