Talk about networking- Millersville University’s new, upcoming organization, or publication rather, has landed on campus all the way from its starting location at Harvard University. Founded two short years ago in 2009 by three undergraduate students at Harvard, “Her Campus” has been extremely viral, spreading throughout the U.S. with chapters on campuses such as The University of Maryland, Cornell University, The University of Missouri, The University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and other higher education institutions.
“Her Campus” is an online magazine deemed the “Collegiatte’s Guide to Life.” It features sections on style, health, love, life, and career content that “any girl can relate to.” “Her Campus” is a publication operated by students, written by students, and dedicated to students. The President and Campus Correspondent of “Her Campus: Millersville,” Amber Strazzo, came across the opportunity to bring this publication to Millersville while browsing the “Her Campus” website. A senior Public Relations major, as well as writing and media enthusiast, Amber is the perfect candidate to start such a unique and monumental project here at the university.
She states, “I love that ‘Her Campus’ is geared towards college women, as most other women’s publications seem to be focused on younger girls or post-grad career women. I’m excited that bringing ‘Her Campus’ to Millersville will give the girls at this school something of their own, whether they’re reading it or writing for it.”
Strazzo expressed a tremendous amount of excitement for this project as she ran down a list of expected topics and features for “Her Campus: Millersville.” Millersville’s version of the publication will feature an advice column, a section called “Campus Cutie,” “Campus Celebrity” categories, and a page displaying upcoming events on campus as well as the surrounding Lancaster area.
When asked about her expectations for “Her Campus: Millersville,” Amber states, “I hope this will help students get more involved.” With this being an online publication, it will take rigorous amounts of dedication to maintain an effective website. Although Amber has enlisted a plethora of friends and classmates with the skills needed to keep this publication up and running smoothly, the team will be looking for writers, photographers and students to help with promotion of “Her Campus: Millersville.”
Jaimee Swift of “Her Campus: Temple,” based at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, says, “Her Campus offers young women currently in college the opportunity to express themselves, and to get involved in something that gives them a sense of belonging. Jaimee offers encouraging words to the newest President here at Millersville by stating that, “It is a very rewarding publication to be a part of, and to keep working hard, and ‘Her Campus: Millersville’ will be nothing but successful.” Although “Her Campus: Millersville” was created by young women, this publication welcomes the input and participation of the male portion of the student body as well. This program is open to people of all social demographics, and thrives off of diversity.
Amber lastly stated, “I would love to see ‘Her Campus’ as a staple here at Millersville that students can turn to for Campus Information and Entertainment. It would be nice that, if this catches on, I and the rest of the current ‘Her Campus’ team will leave a legacy here at Millersville.” There you have it- “Her Campus” is cool, clever, and it is currently at Millersville.
