Hobbs Hall Strives to be Greenest Dorm on Campus

By Patty Kline on April 20, 2010 in Features

With over 500 pounds of bottle caps and 86 ink cartridges collected, Hobbs Hall is the greenest dorm on campus.

Graduate Assistant Josh Belice and Resident Assistant Julie Hughes took a trip to Montreal. They visited the Botanical Gardens and the BioDome to see how different parts of the world are becoming more environmentally friendly. All the RAs in Hobbs encourage their residents to use just five minutes of water while showering. That means turning the water off while you wash your body, or while you wash your hair.

Millersville works with NORESCO, an energy service company in Massachusetts. In October, Millersville dorms exchanged 164 incandescent light bulbs for energy efficient CFL bulbs. With just those 164 bulbs, Millersville is saving 6,875 pounds of coal per academic year. CFL bulbs only use 16 watts, whereas incandescent bulbs use 62 watts.
Millersville also works with Aveda, a hair product company. Since recycling companies do not recycle bottle caps, Aveda does. This semester alone, Gaige Hall collected approximately 350 pounds of bottle caps while Hobbs Hall collected over 500 pounds.

GA Belice gave some going green tips. Using your screen saver on your computer does not actually save energy. Just turning off your monitor will save a significant amount of energy. In fact, turning off any electric appliance when it is not being used saves energy.

There are six ways a college student can save money: Recycle, recycle, recycle; turn off the lights; do not waste water; take the bus; close or open windows; and hold contests for conservation.

If you love our Mother Earth, do what you can to save energy.
