As elections week winds down and the polls close for Student Senate Elections, the lame duck officers do not work any less. Since there was only one candidate running for President, Sarah Darling will take over the office.
A few upcoming dates to remember once again are Saturday, April 10: Brookwood Cleanup from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Student Senate will be the only organization helping out, so if any others are interested they are more than welcome to see Vice President Jackson. April 12 will be the Open Forum during Silencing the Hate Week, held in the Bolger Conference Center at 7 p.m. April 17 is the Walk-A-Thon Student Senate is co-sponsoring, any help is appreciated and those interested can see Angela Smolczynski.
Justin Gilmore and Ash McLaughlin of the MU Allies spoke at the meeting on behalf of Silencing the Hate Week. The event will be held April 11-16, and many campus groups are holding and participating in events challenging all forms of hatred. There will be a screening of the film “The Anatomy of Hate” April 11 at 7 p.m. as part of the week, and a very well known hate group, the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) will be coming to campus April 12 from 7-8 a.m. to protest the film. The WBC is an extremist hate group known for protesting many issues including LGBT issues, religious and social groups, and also the military. The Silencing the Hate planning committee has decided to host Silent Witness Peacekeepers training in order to keep peace while the WBC is on campus. The first training session will be held on Wednesday, April 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Roddy 149. Any questions can be directed to the Silencing the Hate Committee Chairperson Justin Gilmore.
Vice President for Finance and Administration Roger Bruszewski spoke at the meeting regarding the purchasing of the Pa Academy of Music in downtown Lancaster. State funding is being used to purchase the building, not tuition payments. The building will house Council of Trustees meetings, as well as classes currently held in Liberty Place. Bus route 16 goes to the building, and it will be used for a variety of helpful things such as music students’ recitals, and organizations’ speakers.
Anyone with any questions about or requesting uses of the new building, see Mr. Bruszewski. Alongside the SMC closing next year, a few dates for organizations in the building to remember are: April 29, for being packed up and ready to move out; June 14, organizations can start booking meeting rooms for next year at the Berks House.
