For two days the men and women of the Millersville University track and field teams competed in the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
In the 5,000 meter run, both sophomore Elicia Anderson and junior Jared Kneebone had impressive showings. Anderson took second in a field of 50 runners with a time of 17:29.97. Kneebone’s 15:27.63 run put him in 27th place out of more than 70 competitors.
The 3,000 meter steeplechase highlighted two Marauder runners. Freshman runner Sarah Mulvey placed sixth with a time of 12:08.76, while her teammate on the men’s side, senior James Boyor finished with a time of 9:29.35. Boyor’s second, and Mulvey’s sixth place finish, in only their first time running the event promises great results in the season yet to come.
In the always interesting hammer throw event, junior Heather Miller’s distance of 35.52 meters was more than enough to earn 20th, while senior Avery Webster’s throw of 47.77 meters placed him in seventh overall.
Junior Derrick Bass took the sixth position for the men’s longjump with a distance of 6.77 meters. Stephen Boyd’s jump of 13.57 meters sent the Marauder into eighth place in the triple jump event. Sophomore Zac Kohler competed in the exhausting decathalon and placed sixth.
In the 4×100 meter relay, Bass, Anthony Adamski, Keith Ogden, and Jeff Robinson came close to breaking Millersville’s record set for the event back in 1979. Their time of 42.83 seconds was just .55 off the original.
For the Lady Marauders, Michele Frayne won first place in the heptathlon.
After a two weeks of resting and training, the two teams will remain at home April 3 for the Millersville Spring Opener at Biemesderfer Stadium. The event is scheduled to last all day.
