Men’s hoops has consecutive losses

By Matt Topper on March 2, 2010 in Sports

The men’s basketball team struggled to find success in the two games this week, falling to both Cheyney and Bloomsburg. The team now has a record of 8-17 overall and is currently in last place in the PSAC East with a division record of 3-9.

The Marauders tipped off against Cheyney last Wednesday, February 17, at home in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders entered the game coming off a big win against Shippensburg and looked to continue their success on the court.

However, Cheyney came out strong hitting nine shots from beyond the arc in the first half alone. With 11:30 remaining in the first half, Cheyney brought their lead to 11 and Millersville faced a double digit deficit for the remainder of the game.

Cheyney held their largest lead of the first half, going up by 25 points bringing the score to 39-14 with 2:55 remaining on the clock. The Marauders were able to close the gap slightly, bringing the score to 40-21 to end the first half.

The second half was much of the same as the Marauders struggled to stop the offensive scoring from Cheyney. The Marauders faced a 28 point deficit with 9:43 left in the game. The team made a bit of a comeback to finish the game, cutting the Bloomsburg lead in half, ending the game on a score of 88-74, losing by 14 points.

Millersville found their top scorer in the game in sophomore Brandon Widener who put up 12 points against the Wolves. Sophomore Mike Seibert put up an additional 10 points in the game.

On Saturday, the Marauders traveled to Bloomsburg in hopes of discovering their dormant offensive rhythm. Like many games this season, the team had a solid first half. They even held a first half lead of seven points with 7:40 left to play.

The Marauders were able to hold onto their lead going into halftime up by one on a score of 28-27. Entering the second half, the Marauders were able to add their slight lead, going up by six points with 17:20 left in the game.

However, Bloomsburg soon regained control of the game. With 14:14 remaining in the game Bloomsburg regained command of the scoreboard, which they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.

Bloomsburg took their largest lead of the game with only 1:25 left in the game going up by 14 points with a score of 64-50. Millersville was unable to close the gap, and faced another loss by double digits losing the game 66-54.

Millersville was once again led by the shooting of Mike Seibert who put up 14 points against Bloomsburg. This game marked the third straight game where Seibert scored 10 or more points.

The last game of the season is Saturday, February 27 against the Mansfield Mountaineers, who are currently tied for first place in the PASC East division. The game will tip off at 3 p.m. at Pucillo Gymnasium.

“We need to be physical with their post players and make their guards beat us,” senior Alen Ahmetovic said. “Our biggest issue is on offense. We have difficulty scoring at times and we are trying to solve that by speeding the game up,” Ahmetovic added.

This will be the last game for three of Millersville’s seniors including Jason Blake, Plamer McDurfee, and Ahmetovic.
