Athletes of the Week

By Matt Topper on March 2, 2010 in Sports

This week we have selected sophomore Mike Seibert as the male athlete of week. Seibert is a guard on the men’s basketball team. He had a very impressive week on the basketball court, with a highlight game on Monday, Feb. 15, at home against Shippensburg.

In the game, Seibert put up a career high 26 points in Millersville’s win over the Raiders. Seibert helped the Marauders snap a five game losing streak by beating the Raiders 79-71.

On Wednesday, Seibert continued his impressive scoring by having another double digit scoring game. In a game against rival Cheyney, Seibert did all he could to keep the Marauders in the game.

Seibert completed his third straight double digit scoring game against the Huskies of Bloomsburg. Seibert led Millersville in the game with 14 points, unfortunately the team could not pull out a win.

With the basketball season almost over, Seibert will be a key component to the team next season. Throughout the year he has proved to be one of the more reliable shooters on the team and with the departure of graduating senior guards Jason Blake and Plamer McDurfee, Seibert will need to step up next year to fill those places in the lineup.

The female athlete of the week was also found on the basketball court. Redshirt freshman Mashira Newman averaged 14.6 points in her three games this week, helping the lady Marauders continue their stellar season.

On Monday, Newman scored 15 points for the Marauders in their 68-41 win over the lady Raiders of Shippensburg. Entering the game the Marauders were ranked number 25 in division two. The win over Shippensburg was the fifth straight win for the nationally ranked Marauders.

Newman continued to shine on the court scoring 21 points against Cheyney, and led the team in scoring as the Marauders soared over Cheyney 75-64. Newman was a key figure in the team continuing their current winning streak and their run for national recognition.

She also added eight points in the team’s game against Bloomsburg. The Marauders dominated Bloomsburg 56-47. The win over Bloomsburg clinched the PSAC East division title for the Marauders.

Currently, the lady Marauders are ranked number 23 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll for women’s division II basketball. The women’s basketball team has reached the NCAA tournament the previous two seasons, and is looking to make their third consecutive trip.

With only one remaining home game in the regular season, the team needs all the support they can get, and need the fans, to be there as they finished with one the best records in Millersville women’s basketball history.
