`The Millersville women’s swim team had an excellent performance at the East Stroudsburg Invitational on Feb 7.
“I think the team did very well and we stuck together. We knew that not all of us were swimming our best events,” senior swimmer Bre Martinez said. Despite this, the team placed in the top five in 19 events at the meet.
The Marauder’s stood out in the meet’s relay races. In the 200-yard Medley, Millersville had three teams finish in the top five. Coming in third with a time of 2:00.57 was the freshman team of Laura Steinagel, Arielle Walbert, Kelsie Jones, and Sarah Bernhardt. The two other teams came in third and fifth.
Later in the meet, the 200-yard freestyle showed the strengths of the swim team again. Jones, Maribeth Jaeske, Lauren Jendzurski, and Christin Neville tied for first place with a team from East Stroudsburg University. Both teams had a time of 1:16.15 for the race.
Freshman Bernhardt finished in first place in the 100-yard freestyle with an time of 54.70. In the 50-yard freestyle Bernhardt earned fourth place. Bernhardt qualified for the PSACs in both events.
In the 1650-yard freestyle, Walbert made Millersville proud by coming in first place with a time of 18:44.96, more than 11 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
The seventh event of the meet, the 100-yard backstroke, Jones led the pack to a first place finish, earning her place in the PSAC Championships.
On Feb. 18, the swimming Lady Marauders head to Mechanicsburg, Pa. for the PSAC Championships. The team is excited for the upcoming event, “I’m nervous for PSACS because I know this is my last real chance. I would love to go out with a bang,” Martinez said.
As a departing senior, she also had some advice for any incoming swimmers. “For all the new recruits…have fun but remember this is a team and we always stick together and try our hardest.” The Championship meet runs through Sunday, Feb. 21.
