Sykes galler in the nude: Danielle Kramer Exhibition

By Samantha Edminston on November 5, 2009 in Arts & Culture

Many of you may have seen the mesmerizing and also very nude people on exhibition in the Sykes Gallery of the Briedenstein Art Building.

Stepping into the main lobby of the building, it was the first thing that caught my eye.
However, these people are in fact sculpture, shockingly white and depicted for the most part naked.

This sculpture is something notonly to be seen, but experienced.
The exhibition is called “Only the Real” by Danielle Krcmar.

Housed in the gallery, are sculptures of women, busts of men and women with different expressions on their faces, a child touching his toes, a person in a bed and a child standing beside it, each wonderfully tangible in its own right.

Yet, there was one piece that struck memore than all the others. On one end of the gallery there is a sculpture of a woman.

She has flowing hair that, to the glance seemed real, as well as white skin that appeared to be plaster or stucco.

Her body is unclothed and she is standing beneath a tree, stripped of its leaves and fruit.

Apples litter the ground around her, one is clutched in her left hand and a serpent encircles her right arm.

Putting it all together I concluded that this must be Krcmar’s depiction of the biblical Eve. Every piece is like Eve.

They are haunting, white figures with realistic hair and expressions.
It is quite something to see.

Danielle Kramar is known for her figurative sculptures for which she uses a secret mixture of materials (which I mistakenly thought was stucco). She focuses on interpersonal relationships and pushing the boundaries of those relationships.

A good example of this is depicted in one of the pieces of the exhibition that is a bust of a man and a woman, passionately kissing, with looks of pure love on their faces.

Krcmar received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in sculpture from SUNY Binghamton and her Master’s of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
She now resides in Massachusetts and is the artist in residence at Babson College.

Danielle Krcmar’s work has been reviewed in sculpture Magazine, the Boston Arts Media, the Boston Globe, and many others.

Krcmar work has been displayed throughout New England and New York City including in the Fuller Art Museum, and the Duxbury Art Complex Museum, the Gallery at Green Street.

Krcmar’s talent and credentials show through in her exhibition here at Millersville.

The sculpture is such that I have never seen before.

It is very unique in medium as well as theme. The exhibition in Briedenstein began at 12 p.m. on October 19 with a lunchtime lecture and an opening reception and will continue to be on display until November 20.

The Sykes Gallery is located on the first floor of the building and is open from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Monday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Go and enjoy the presentation of “Only the Real”.
