Student Senate plans to represent the whole student body

The Student Senate has been very busy lately.

A group of senators attended the SMC Groundbreaking Ceremony this Homecoming Weekend, as well participating in the Homecoming parade Saturday morning. Senators also attended the Cultural Showcase, which vice president Brandy Jackson played a large part in putting together. They also held Marauder Madness the Friday before Homecoming.

Zach Love, a senator, was also named Homecoming Charity King. Love raised $755 and is very thankful of everyone, including Senate, for helping.

The Senate also has a lot of events coming up in the near future. Wiener Wednesdays will be starting the second Wednesday of November. Senate also plans to implement a Campus Cleanup day in the spring.

Senator Jerry Broniec’s resignation letter was read at the meeting.
Broniec was a dedicated senator who said that he needs to focus on his studies currently. Broniec said in his letter that he believes the senate’s biggest challenge is “representation to the whole student body.” The senate trying to achieve just that with all upcoming events.

The dining committee chairperson reported that the senate will name the dining area under Gordinier that will be built in the near future.

The housing committee chairperson reported that the Brookwood and Wellness apartments have cheaper rates than most others in Pennsylvania, and that the Brookwood building 15 is being rebuilt starting in March.

A few new chairs were named at the meeting. Bree Bolin will be the new Parking Enforcement Chair, and will work closely with the MUPD. Shane McGrady was voted to fill the open seat on the Constitution Committee. Finally, the October Senator of the Month voted on, Zach Love was the winner.

Due to recent resignations, the Student Senate now has eight on-campus open seats. There are 15 commuting students, and 2 graduate student assistants on the senate. Senate meetings are Thursdays at 6:30 pm in the SMC, room 161.
