Student senate meeting welcomed Dr. Thomas Burns to speak

This week in the Student Senate, a guest speaker from the Middle States came to speak to the Senators.

Dr. Thomas Burns, the Associate Provost for Admissions, spoke on behalf of the Millersville Self-Study Process, which is part of the re-accreditation process of colleges every ten years. Dr. Burns mentioned the re-accreditation document, which describes the university and the process. The document is called Rediscover Millersville 2010 Self Study, and is available on the website, as well as hard copies on reserve in the library.

All students and faculty are encouraged to read the self study, and give feedback to Dr. Burns or his colleagues.
On October 27, 2009 from 10 to 11 a.m. and on October 28, 2009 from 2 to 3 p.m. there will be public community forums to discuss the self study document. For more information or to read the document, visit http://www.millersville.edu/rediscovermu.

The Senate discussed a date for their premiere fund raiser, “Weiner Wednesdays,” which will hopefully begin the second week of November. Zach Love was elected as the chairperson for the Senate House of Representatives committee, which will be getting off the ground soon.

The Cultural Showcase was held with Senators Kelly Mathiesen and Bree Bolin representing Senate as Switzerland at the showcase. Vice President Brandy Jackson put the event together.

Student Senate will participate in a holiday video greeting about what they are grateful for with the Millersville Marketing Department next week. The video will be shown on the university’s homepage over the winter months.

The AniMu Club, an organization trying to unite Anime fans and gamers, as well as those who wish to learn more about Japanese culture, was granted temporary status by Senate. The club’s executive board attended the meeting, and the acting president and vice president presented an emotional plea to the senators. The students were thrilled to be granted temporary status, and have many events planned to get their club’s name on campus.

Permanent status was granted to the Interfraternal Council. The IFC has been on probation, and they help out with the All Greek Council and work with fraternities on campus.

The constitutional changes of the College Republicans were also passed at the meeting.

The University has received enough applications for the Student Trustee position, and the election will be moving forward. Tom Richardson reported on the status of channels being replaced within the university channel lineup. If anyone has any questions regarding the television channels, see Richardson.

The final note of the meeting was that it is time for COSGA, which is the Conference of Student Government Associates. It is a conference held at Texas A&M from February 27 through March 2, 2010. Millersville sends a maximum of six senators each year, and it is an experience and opportunity that many may not have known the Senate participated in. Next week the Senate will be taking part in a bonding hayride and bonfire night.

Just because your SGA sends six students to COSGA every year doesn’t mean that it SHOULD. The American Student Government Association produces 10 training conferences, and several are in your region.

My experience with COSGA as a presenter for 10 years in a row is that there is far too much focus on “nightlife” and not nearly enough focus on “content.”
