The healthcare debate in Congress has finally taken a step toward being resolved, however, the flip side of the whole debate is rather interesting.
Those senators and representatives opposing the healthcare plan say that it is a step toward socialism. Claiming that government-run insurance is too intrusive and controlling, the congressmen use this as ammo to oppose the bill.
One interesting point to mention is that some of the front runners of the opposition have received hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, in campaign contributions by healthcare companies.
This little tidbit of information cannot go unnoticed, because it is a prime example of how big corporations with big lobbies control the government.
According to Rick Sanchez of CNN, healthcare companies have put forth $378 million in the last eight months to influence the debate over healthcare.
Lobbying efforts (wining, dining, etc.) alone account for $280 million, and campaign donations add up to $23 million. Television ads, perhaps the least crooked part of this whole situation, account for $75 million.
To say that the congressmen will not be swayed or influenced by perks and campaign contributions only proves how blind you really are to the world of politics.
These corporations did not contribute money to campaigns out of their love for democracy, they want to buy the congressmen!
The sad part is that the congressmen who received money seem more than happy to oblige the corporations that laid down the green.
As CNN.com reported, Independent senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said sarcastically, “The idea that they (healthcare corporations) would get anything for their money, I am sure, is the furthest possible thing on their minds.”
Bernie Sanders is the exact type of congressman we need in government. He is honest, open, and seems to be much less dirty than some other congressmen.
Mr. Sanders also supports the use of the website opensecrects.org, which is a site that displays all of the campaign contributions for U.S. congressmen.
If you log on and check it out, you will be amazed, or perhaps just have your thoughts validated, by the amount of money dumped into campaigns by private companies. What does all of this add up to?
Well, if congressmen are being bought, and the corporations hold the purse strings, then who is really running our country?

What I find interesting is the whole socialism argument. Our own healthcare system is in effect a inefficient socialist industry. My example: my boyfriend has Scoliosis. Though it may not seem life-threatening, scoliosis as severe as my boyfriend’s could take up to fifteen years off his life due to the resulting compression of his chest cavity. His surgery was estimated at $500,000. Even if he paid into his health insurance for over a hundred years he could never pay them back. And so, for his surgery, other customers of his health insurance plan footed the bill. Seems like socialism, except it’s mainly for middle to upper class white people only, with a minority of minorities able to participate. A lot of people say that socialism will destroy our economy- but what about all the other countries who have capitalism AND universal health care? Those countries are highest on “Happy Polls”. I think the main reason a lot of people do not want universal healthcare is that they don’t want to pay for poor, thus uneducated and lazy, people’s healthcare. From the majority of people who oppose healthcare reform that is the answer I get. They don’t want their hard-earned tax dollars to go to dumb, poor people. And that rationale doesn’t make sense. First, it’s assholeish, and second, it’s just untrue. The majority of Americans get most of the money they pay in taxes back the next year. Most of their tax dollars don’t go anywhere but back to their own pockets. I think the problem here is out of control companies and a stubbornly, willfully ignorant populace.
I don’t see why my money should have to go to help out people that are not motivated enough to get their own health care. Our founding fathers did not want us to have too much State or Federal interference into our lives, and I believe this is a breach of our Constitution. In America, every person is given their chance to decide what they want to do with their lives and the Government should be controlled as to what they have their say with. Why are companies out of control? They do well and succeed in life and you want to punish them? The only reason you are arguing is probably because you are of little money and want the mighty to fall. Socialism only brings down the best in a Society so we all can be the same. If everyone gets paid the same wages no matter how much effort they put in what is your desire to perform well? I dont think you understand socialism look it up before you claim our system is socialist as it is now. I am sorry to hear about your boyfriend but you have to look at the real issue here and leave your personal feelings out of it.
What if we implement this new system where everyone has healthcare? Will this become a problem with the illegal immigrants entering every day! All the other countries with universal health care and capitalism have BOUNDARIES! We will just be taking every other country’s sick and making them better. I hope you have a big wallet for this task!
