Student Senate meeting discusses student trustees position

By Daniella Singleton on September 30, 2009 in News

“Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror,” is the quote printed on the meeting agenda for last Thursday’s meeting of Millersville University’s Student Senate. The quote, said by Byrd Bagget, is exactly what every member of Student Senate does.

President Mackenzie Wrobel, Vice President Dan Aiello, Treasurer Joe Muller, Recording Secretary Kaila Repman, Corresponding Secretary Sarah Darling and Parliamentarian Donnie Aulenbach, as well as every student senator, and the faculty advisors work incredibly hard to cater to every one of Millersville’s student body’s needs.

Student Senate handles almost every concern or problem relating to something on campus. In order to be a senator, you must keep office hours, polling hours, and hold membership on at least two committees. Student Senate has committees for pretty much everything, including dining, housing, student concerns, and much more. There are currently nine open seats for on campus students; fourteen open seats for commuting students, and two open seats for graduate students. At the meeting on Thursday, five new freshmen representatives were sworn in as new senators, as well as one commuting student that was re-sworn in.

An important point of information addressed at the Student Senate meeting was that there is still a Student Trustee position open. Student Trustees do not have to be senators, but must have completed at least two semesters; one at Millersville, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and at least 12 credits. Student Trustees work toward promoting the University and its welfare.

Other business covered included work toward producing a Student Senate newsletter, which would be physically available to students and organizations informing every one of what is going on with Student Senate on campus. Student Senate also voted to open a Survey Monkey account online in order to keep in touch with student body concerns by having survey questions and spaces for students to place their own comments and concerns relating to issues. The vote also passed to allocate $349.65 to the MU Cycling Club, in order for their president, a very prestigious cyclist, to attend the Trexlertown Nationals.

Keep your eye out on campus for the Student Senate at events such as the Wellness Fair, Campus Conquest, and the Cultural Showcase, where they will be Switzerland. Remember the Student Trustee position is open if you are interested. Student Senate meetings are held every Thursday at 6:30 in SMC Room 161. Applications for Student Trustees are due October 16th and can be picked up in the Senate Office or the Information desk in the SMC.
