Men’s soccer continues with the winning trend

By Andrew Mease on September 30, 2009 in Sports

It was a good week for the Marauder Men’s soccer team as they defeated Lock Haven 3-0 to move to 7-1 in the season, and 4-0 within the conference.

The 425 fans in attendance saw Millersville score three first-half goals; two of them by Dan Prian, with assists from Matt Wilson; and the other by Steve Melnick, assisted by Anthony Pagnotti. Prian’s two goals came within two minutes of each other as he scored at 17:20 and 18:53. Goalkeeper Matt Langione recorded two saves for his sixth shutout of the season.

The Marauders play host, Wednesday night, to the East Stroudsburg Warriors in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East battle with playoff implications. Earlier this year the Marauders defeated the Warriors 1-0 at East Stroudsburg. Also on Saturday, the Marauders will travel to Erie, PA for a non-league matchup with Gannon.

Millersville will be led into the contests by Kyle Loughlin (4G, 4A this season), Pat Baffuto (3G, 2A this season), Dan Prian (2G, 3A this season), and Matt Langione’s (0.79 goals per game).

“East Stroudsburg is always a big game in the team’s mind, because it‘s East Stroudsburg,” said midfielder Pat Baffuto. “They got picked above us in the PSAC this year again, showing the lack of respect our conference has for us, so we are always out to show that we are the better team.”

The Marauders fell to number six in the most recent polls after their loss at Wilmington two weeks ago. “After the loss, Widdow just wanted us to get back into our old mentality where we work hard and are relentless, sort of a blue collar team,” Baffuto said about the way the team is bouncing back after the loss. “He knows how much of a heartbreak it was for us to lose, especially the way we did.”

Take a break from your studies on Wednesday night and come support the Marauders as they host their rival, the East Stroudsburg University Warriors soccer team.
