`The end of August usually indicates the close of summer and the start of school; however it also marks the beginning of a long four years for the new students.
Numerous cars and students hauling loads of bags on Tuesday August 25th marked the beginning of The New Student Orientation, welcoming in the class of 2013.
Although there were not any big changes to the Orientation schedule this year, a Parent and Family Orientation Program was created and occurred on Saturday, July 25th.
This provided parents and family members to gather on campus to receive a little more information about Millersville before their student actually came to campus in August.
The creation of the Parent and Family Orientation Program was also a way to provide an opportunity for parents and family members to speak with members of the faculty, staff and administration, because parents and family members tend to have numerous questions and concerns before their student goes off to college.
Other changes to the orientation schedule this year included having the Convocation ceremony moved to Friday night instead of Sunday night to encourage student, faculty, staff, and administration attendance.
The Block Party was also renamed “The Quad Party.”
The party was moved to the Sunday of Orientation, which had a vast attendance.
Kelly Duncan, Assistant Director of Student Programs, found that, “the events (both academic and social) were well attended and, from conversations with Orientation Leaders as well as conversations with first year students, it seems like the majority of students are having a smooth transition and are excited for their college experience at Millersville.”
The Orientation Leaders put a lot of hard work and dedication into making the orientation week run smoothly with a successful attendance within the programs.
Senior Orientation Leader Shannon Farrelly found that “orientation was a great success this year and I am very excited to see further potential this incoming class has to offer.”
With the changes added to orientation this year, we can only hope the incoming students had a memorable experience.
