Time is running out for the Women’s lacrosse team to turn their season around. Losing four in a row, the team dug a hole that will be hard to crawl out of.
“It would take a near miracle,” said senior attack Becca Barker.
On Saturday, the team experienced their fourth consecutive loss when they hosted Mercyhurst. The final result was the Marauders falling 20-10.
Junior Liz Weekley rallied three goals and two assists for the Marauders but her efforts were not enough to overcome the deficit. In the first 30 minutes of play Mercyhurst came off strong building a 13-4 lead over Millersville.
The Marauders fought to keep up with Mercyhurst early in the half with goals by Weekley and freshman Brittney Long cutting the Lakers lead to three. The score was never close again as the Lakers sparked a scoring spree shortly after, that continued throughout the rest of the game.
The Marauders and the Lakers each had 16 turnovers. Millersville fired 27 shots at the goal and Mercyhurst took 34. The Marauder goalie Madison Allen blocked seven shots while the Lakers goalkeepers totaled 13 saves.
Mercyhurst also saw more penalties than the Marauders as they had five players receive yellow cards, compared to Millersville’s two.
“We do not look at it as a losing-streak. We understand the reasons why we did not win. Some of the games have been against teams which executed when we did not, with other losses we know what we did wrong and are working to fix it,” Barker said. “Our main problem has been numbers. Right now our team is working with one substitute, our starting goalie is injured and many of our players are hurting. While mentally, many of us are physically ready for the season to be over.”
However, no matter how physically tired they are, the Marauders are not going down with out a fight. They were able to put it together to produce a win Tuesday against visiting Kutztown. The team outscored Kutztown 17-6 with senior Liz Weekley scoring seven giving her 120 career goals.
The win improved the marauders record 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the league.
The Marauders had control over the game from the start of play and scored just over four minutes into the game. At the half, Millersville led 11-2.
Weekley went on a 10 minute scoring spree during the second half, racking the score up higher for the Marauders.
Other Marauder goals came from freshman Britney Long, junior Lindsay Toriello who each contributed three, junior Katie DiRico and sophomore Katrina Segar put in two.
“Today [Tuesday] we played a great game. The team was relaxed, worked together, communicated on the field and had fun playing today,” Barker said. “ Our goal is to do the same things in the last four games of the season.”
Off the field the Marauders are working together as a team taking part in the “Lax 4 Life” effort. The effort helps to raise awareness and support for preventing adolescent suicide.
On Sunday April 19 the team will not only host opponents Regis, but will also be holding their annual alumni game.
The alumni event will take place at 10:30 a.m. and the Marauders will take the field afterward at 1 p.m. At both events the team will be collecting donations for “Lax 4 Life.”
Also at the events the team will honor this season’s graduating seniors Barker, Emily Colburn, Laura DeLuca, Jackie Geiger and Kelly Kemper.
