MU dance team offers a wide range of styles on stage

By Emily Kanter on April 15, 2009 in Arts & Culture

Expressions dance team is one of the most passionate student-run organizations on Millersville’s campus.

The group consists of approximately 50 girls who all share a passion for dance and the stage.

Expressions holds try-outs during the fall of each semester and prides itself on the fact that they accept all levels of dancers who are enthusiastic to learn, maintain a positive attitude and enjoy having fun.

It is the only organization on campus that offers dance classes in different genres and levels.

Weekly classes, which are taught and choreographed by group members, consist of: jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet, modern, lyrical, and Broadway jazz.

Expressions is organized and run completely by students.

The executive board consists of a president, Lex Newbauer, vice president, Sara Heller, secretary, Erin Marks, treasurer, Megan Ball, and public relations manager Laura DiTrapano.

Additionally, Expressions offers an opportunity for members of the organization to audition and join the Company.

The Company is a smaller group that is made up of 20 advanced, technically trained dancers representing the organization. They perform at campus events such as: basketball games, the cultural showcase, the homecoming parade, the student showcase and many more.

Additionally, Expressions has bonding events and socials throughout the year in order for the members to get to know each other and have fun together.

Expressions dace team showcases their talents at the end of the year with a recital.
This year the group’s fifth annual spring recital was called Music Notes for the Dancer’s Sou” and is a culmination of a year filled with hard work and effort made by all.

The theme of the recital this year was based on demonstrating the evolution of different emotions through dance.

Lex Newbauer, writes in the program, “Joy, sorrow, pain, success, love, envy, friendship, excitement pride and passion have all been colorfully painted on the dancer’s canvas, the stage before you.”

When watching  Expressions dance team perform, it is clear that they are all having fun and belong on the stage.

This year’s recital was on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11 in Lyte Auditorium.
The show was a perfect mixture of peaceful and upbeat dance numbers that displayed the organization’s commitment and talent.

The girls performed hip-hop, jazz, tap, modern and lyrical dances that ranged from many dancers to solo performances.

Some artists that the group danced to included: Missy Elliot, Britney Spears, Breaking Benjamin, Lady Gaga, Jimi Hendrix and System of a Down.

Overall, Expressions is an organization that dedicates itself to the passion all members feel for dance and the stage.

The members of the group all work hard while at the same time having fun and making lasting memories.
