The Best Buddies Friendship Ball raises $7,000

By Andrew Leister on April 8, 2009

The Best Buddies Friendship Ball allowed Millersville University students as well as the community to raise money for the international organization.

Best Buddies, which was founded in 1989, is in alliance with over 1,400 colleges in the country.

It is a non-profit organization, that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals who have intellectual disabilities. They also provide opportunities for one-on-one friendships and integrated employment.

Although the event is held every year, Millersville does not participate annually.

The organization has chapters in the community colleges, as well as high schools and middle schools. The Millersville chapter is part of the 15 Eastern Pennsylvania region.

Chapters who are interested in becoming involved with the organization are required to self-nominate themselves to their region or state representatives. If the criterion is met, the institution is selected to host the annual event.

There were approximately 50 students involved, as well as 40 community members.  Fund raising was the main source of money to be devoted towards hosting the event. The students worked with the community, raising $7,000.  They had fund raising through events such as “Bowl-a-Thon” and filling candy canes with money. Also, they had special events through Joe Corby’s Pizza, Wolfgang Chocolate and Coldstone Creamery. Additionally, through a donation from the community, 25 raffle prizes were given out to raise money.

There were 400 people who actually attended the ball. “The event was an enormous success,” said Dr. Ellen Long, assistant professor of special education.

“It was truly a tribute to out Millersville students and community members who are the examples of the spirit and purpose of the Best Buddies organization.”
