The Millersville University Gospel Choir (MUGC) is the perfect group to join for anyone looking to express themselves through singing. The MUGC has approximately 20 members, both male and female. MUGC President, Amanda Patterson, Vice President Karnesa Ray and Treasurer Irvin Rivera all welcome new members. The group meets once a week on Wednesday evening from 9p.m. to 11p.m. in room 210 of Chryst Hall.
They sing both slow and fast gospel songs by familiar artists of the gospel world such as: Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker, Tye Tribbett and Fred Hammond. One song that they are currently working on is Matthew 28 by Donald Lawrence. It is an upbeat, feel-good song that makes you want to get out of your seat and dance. The MUGC also performs their own version of the Millersville University Alma Mater written by a group member three years ago.
President Amanda Patterson says, “Our main goal is to spread the word of God through song, and to create a sense of family within our group.” Patterson explains how the group is made up of members of all races and anyone who shares their same passion is encouraged to join.
Although MUGC is a student-run organization, they also encourage faculty members to join.
The group often collaborates with FootPrints Dance Ministries, a non-profit professional dance ensemble whose goal is to transform the lives of their members. Many individuals involved in MUGC are also in FootPrints.
The Millersville University Gospel Choir goes on a “tour” every year. The tour includes a trip to Disney World and Universal Studios. They have performances at both Magic Kingdom and the gates entering Universal Studios. The MUGC also makes a stop in Georgia at a local Baptist Church to minister to the people of the town.
Unfortunately, the group will not be going on “tour” this year due to lack of funds, but they are replacing it with other exciting events. The choir plans on going on a retreat that will include vocal workshops, speakers and other fun activities.
The Millersville Gospel Choir “aims to create a place where other members of the campus can come and feel like they have a family away from home.”
