In the last edition, Khadijah Hassan wrote an interesting article in the opinion section of The Snapper. The article shared Hassan’s frustration with the notion of God. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the article and thought it was very thought-provoking. So provoking in fact, that I have decided to add my own two cents and review Hassan’s claims.
As I stated before Hassan wrote to express her doubt in the existence of God and apparently how such a belief is a lie. After reading the article 12 or 13 times, I divided it into sections. Within the first two paragraphs Hassan states her conclusion and uses the rest of the essay to defend it. The entire argument goes as follows:
Intro: States conclusion “God doesn’t exist”
- Religion is control
- If there is a God why do we suffer?
- Religion is control
- How can God forgive evildoers?
- He is egotistical due to his alleged demands
These are the five arguments that Hassan uses to defend her doubt in God’s existence. Unfortunately, only one of these premises actually constitutes an argument against the existence of God. All of the others, with the exception of two have nothing to do with proving God’s existence, rather they argue God’s nature and what kind of God, God is, for her arguments entail God’s existence. Therefore arguments one, three, four and five require consent to God’s existence and are entirely irrelevant and should be saved for another debate.
This leaves premise two the classic “If there is a God why do we suffer?” If she were to study the religion deeper, she would have known that Christians operate out of the belief that God allows for free will, and for God to intrude on free will, would contradict what he claims to be. Hassan expresses some good questions but no real arguments against God. There are much better reasons to be an atheist.
