As organizations look to next year’s activities, they are presenting their budgets to Student Senate’s Allocations Committee, in hopes of getting enough funding to support their group.
The committee met with students this week in the form of information sessions, as apposed to one-on-one meetings they had in previous years with representatives from each organization.
There are over 150 student organizations at Millersville University, with over 90 of them applying for allocations.
Student Senate has the power to give emergency allocations to University programs and check the financial status of the clubs.
Senate is holding information sessions so that organizations can apply for allocations.
Each organization must send a representative to the sessions in order to apply.
Not every organization applies for allocations.
Funds are usually held for the organizations that need the money for trips, conferences and campus-wide events.
In addition, allocations could be closed to exclusive groups who are not open to the entire campus.
If budget packets are not turned in to the allocations committee by Jan. 22 they will not be considered for the next school years allocations.
“These funds are crucial because they cover the cost of most things the organizations do,” said Joe Benisch, Student Senate Treasurer and head of the Allocations Committee.
The money given to organizations does not depend on the amount of members they have. Funds will not be awarded for alcohol, direct funding to charitable organizations, exclusive organizations, honorariums, fundraising activities, or food, unless open to the entire campus.
“A committee looks at the allocations for the year and then there is a percentage cut, to make sure that everyone has enough money; that included money left over for emergencies,” Benisch said.
One of the only problems that the Student Senate faces in determining the allocations is making sure that they have enough money left over for all the organizations that apply.
They also have to make sure that they have enough allocations for emergencies, because if an organization runs out of funds for the year, they have to appeal to the Student Senate for more money.
