Millersville may not be located in a fashion-savvy city such as N.Y.C. or L.A., but the level of fashion need not suffer amongst the student body.
As students reach for their saggy, well-worn hoodie and soft, forgiving sweatpants because the temperature is dropping, and fatty, holiday comfort foods have become an everyday staple, students might want to reconsider how their choice of clothing really makes them feel.
Forgiven, are the random days where students have no care towards their wardrobe because they are sick or have been studying scrupulously, but for those who have the ability, dressing well should be an everyday consideration.
Dressing well does not imply that students force themselves to get ‘gussied up’ for class, but should involve appropriateness alongside individual choice of expression in their wardrobe. Michael Kors, a fashion designer, noted for his appearances on Project Runway, describes the simple appropriateness of wearing the right size clothes, “Don’t pay attention to the size tags…Men wear their clothes too big and women wear their clothes too small.”
This is something he sees many Americans disregard, though something as simple as wearing clothes that fit can bolster a person’s self-esteem.
Though not all students may find self-esteem in their personal appearance, scientifically, personal appearance may weigh heavy on students capabilities in the classroom as well as social scenes.
In his study of how physical appearances affect personality, Nathan Popkins of Northwestern University states that, “Much the same way people’s personality affects how others treat those people, so too does appearance.”
When students feel confident with the way they look-which can be attributed to the way they dress, students may find it easier to socialize with their peers.
They may also find themselves more capable of doing well in class, as according to Dr. Chris Kleinke, a psychology professor, those with lower self-esteem may become too uncomfortable in their environments to succeed.
Dressing well can equal social success and academic accomplishments.
The purpose of being a student at Millersville University is to succeed academically, but it should also be a playground for trying out different levels of professional style until students find the appropriate clothes for their personalities and career choices.
