The week of Oct. 20 marks the beginning of Alcohol Awareness week.
Over the course of the week, special events will take place in order to get students more in touch with the dangers of alcohol and being able to reduce the risk and harm that could come with use of alcohol by a student.
One event being held during Alcohol Awareness Week is a contest that was put together by John Baltzer, of the counseling department and Dr. William Dorman, professor of communications.
Students are asked to create a 30-second Public Service Announcement using video or audio or a 3-column by 10-inch printed media.
The material that the students are supposed to get the information from, is found on National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) website or the students are asked to refer to CHOICES booket, which can be found in the Counseling Center lobby on the third floor of Lyle Hall.
The judging for the contest will take place on Oct. 22, when the finalist videos will be shown in the SMC. Students will be able to go in during their free time to check it out. Prizes will also be awarded to the winners of the contest.
The prizes this year are Visa Gift Cards-four cards will be awarded, $200 to the overall winner and three other $100 gift cards will be awarded to the remaining winners.
When asked about the importance of holding such a contest during this week, John Baltzer said, “It’s all about reducing the risk and reducing the harm.”
This contest, although aimed at all students, is targeted more towards the freshmen, since it is seen that they are at greater risk of developing alcohol abuse problems.
The website was created by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and designed to inform the public on issues that are related to college drinking.
It also presents an alcohol calculator which allows you to calculate how many calories that are going into your body as you drink, what alcohol is actually costing you, plus you can also calculate your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). Those who are looking to enter must pick up an entry form and CHOICES booklet in the third floor lobby of Lyle Hall.
The permission slips for the entrants must be signed for the PSA and those are taking part in the PSA. The final PSA and permission slips must be given to Baltzer, the AOD in the Counseling Center.
The final deadline of the contest is Oct. 17 at 9:00 p.m.
