This summer I was outraged when I went to pay my summer bill for two classes totaling close to $2,000 with my Visa and was denied. I was told that Millersville no longer accepts Visa.
What? Seriously, that is ridiculous. Visa is one of the top credit agencies in the world.
Most places only accept Visa or MasterCard. It blows my mind that here at Millersville University, a state school of higher education, we do not accept Visa as a type of payment.
When I questioned the Bursar’s office on why they did not accept Visa their reasoning was that they did not want to have to foot the fees.
The funny thing is that after I had to borrow my mom’s MasterCard to pay the bill, the credit card fees were tacked onto the payment I had to make. If I am paying the fees it should not matter what fees Visa is charging.
I was told on the phone that the solution to not using Visa was that I could write out a check. With this answer?I wanted to pull out my hair. That was obviously not possible or I would have done that in the first place instead of charging it and earning interest on it while I am making payments.
The whole point putting it on my Visa was so that I could make monthly payments on it throughout the summer.
Summer Sessions do not allow payment plans because they are so short, so that was not an option. What a hassle. I had to go to my bank and try to get a loan and then ended up just asking my parents to let me use their MasterCard.
I just find it ironic and a pain that this campus does not accept Visa because PSECU is shoved in our faces and we are told what a great service that is, and honestly it is a great program, especially for students who are not from the area and need to do banking. I am in no way knocking PSECU however PSECU, is backed by Visa therefore the card cannot be used for payments on campus.
What sense does that make? Whoever decided that this campus would be anti-Visa made a very poor choice and obviously did not take into consideration that since Visa is so predominant that it might be the only card students have, which I think is a good thing, considering we are always being warned of getting into credit trouble.
The words in this article can not even begin to discribe how irritated I was and how much of an inconvince this caused.
There are road-side stands that accept Visa, and yet at a University it is not an option. How lame is that?
`
There are a number of universities with this same policy of not accepting Visa. I believe the reason for this Visa restriction is because other payment brands (MasterCard, American Express, Discover) allow percentage-based convenience fees while Visa only allows flat amount convenience fees. A number of universities have simply decided to stop accepting Visa specifically because of this.
Augusta… stop whining.
I have friends in their 6th decade of life that do not have a VISA. Actually, my mother is in her 8th decade of life and does not have a VISA.
Who cares?
However, it concerns me that you were charged 2k for two classes. I am sure the lovely people at MU Financial Aid would be very happy to help you with your obvious deficit in understanding how summer aid works.
I am an Engish major, but the mathematics are simple. You want to space out your aid so there is money available to you in the summer.
Then, you thank your higher power that you are not conscripted to the Armed Forces and fighting in unpleasing and vexing foreign soil, and enjoy your time at this fine institution of higher learning.
And yes, stop whining.
I thank you in advance for your expected cooperation in this matter.
